Hi, the pencil lead length measures 15mm, it also comes with a spare and a clip on adapter for a pencil to be used instead. I highly recommend this item for precision.

Q: is it possible to use normal pens and mechanical pencils with this compass?

The simple answer is - yes it is. The compass comes with a additional 'click-in' adaptor (which replaces the adaptor which holds the pencil leads), and a pencil can be held in this adaptor by means of a plastic screw (also provided). If the 'mechanical pencil' is the same diameter as an ordinary pencil, then you should also be able to use that. I hope that this helps.
