Q: Whats shelf life on accuracy if i buy a 3 pack and have one that sits for a yr, and another two yrs ?!?

They don’t expire if they aren’t opened & ‘activated’ (there’s just a seal you remove before hanging in tank). Each one comes individually packaged. The one year countdown only starts after you open it & the seal is removed. I’ve tested the functionality myself & bought this three pack twice now. So much easier & nicer to have a way to constantly monitor ammonia.

Q: how does this work? Does the center change color based on ammonia content?

Yes, the center changes. I have found these monitors to be very helpful in my quarantine system. If I notice a slight change in color, I change out some water. Usually, it returns to yellow, but occasionally, I need to change out a little more water. It's seems pretty accurate.

Q: Why is my test showing the color gray in the center? I dont see that color on the wheel.

Now, this is strictly an antidotal answer and not based on science, but what I have found is that when there's a graying of the center color, it indicates a slightly higher ammonia level than what is required to keep the alert in the yellow (safe) area, but not enough to hit the initial alert color. When I see it graying, I add Fritz Complete to neutralize the ammonia and then either do a small water change (too much will only mess up your bacteria levels and the tank balance even worse) or add Fritz 700 to bring the bacteria up to the level needed to handle the ammonia load. If I've recently added more fish, I do both. It takes a while for the color to return to normal. However, testing after treating with Complete will give you an inaccurate result as tests will still show positive for neutralized ammonia. The Alert will only report active ammonia. I hope this is helpful.
