Great option for astronomy, especially compared to a lot of other red flashlights.
This is a great flashlight for astronomy, minus the fact that even on its dimmest setting its still pretty bright. I love the fact that its either on or off, there are no different settings and features (red, blue, green, flashing, etc) that you need to cycle through before you get to the red light. Its easy to use, and easy to adjust, and retains your setting when turning off and on. Its more expensive than some other red flashlights, but its worth the extra money. Construction is solid, and seems like it will last a while. Light output is even, no big hotspots like there would be with a reflective cone. All in all I think this is a great option for astronomy and will be purchasing more of them in the future.

Good value even for astronomy
This works quite well as a hobby astronomy aid. At lowest brightness and widest beam, I can easily read maps and eyepiece inscriptions, and it does not significantly impair my dark adaptation or annoy my fellow hobbyists. Especially useful is that it is smoothly adjustable to different brightness levels even without turning it on.I do wish it could be dimmed even further, like products made specifically for astronomy, but despite this it works well enough, is general purpose, is solidly built, and is an excellent value.

Great red light flashlight w/ possible flaw
One of the first red-light only flashlights with fully variable brightness. Being a stargazer since I was a kid, I ordered this as soon as I saw it.Pros:* Red-light only - no cycling through all white-light modes to get a red light!* Continuously variable brightness - not just one or two light levels.* The light field is very even throughout most of the zoom range.* Maintains same light level when switched off and on.* Excellent build - equal to higher priced aluminum-body flashlights.Cons:* At it's dimmest, it's still pretty bright for dark-adjusted eyes. Bright red light can still affect your night vision.

Awesome combination of features!
I was just getting started with astronomy, and one of the accessories suggested was a red light flashlight to help preserve your night vision. The problem I ran into was pretty much all of them were some variation of light that had multiple functions that required multiple presses or a long press to turn it on or off. What a nuisance? Has anyone EVER used the strobe on a flashlight?! Why require people to step through that constantly? Then I came across this and realized it was very different. It focuses on features that are genuinely useful and work extremely well. At the back there is a dial that you press to power on, then press again to turn it immediately off (what a concept!). You can turn the dial to smoothly adjust the brightness from very low to respectable bright. At the front is a basic push/pull focus design. What that means is that I can immediately flick it on and off as necessary, keep it low when I don't want a ton of light bothering people, but still get enough light to see what I'm doing.Seriously, this has everything I wanted and none of the pointless nuisance "features" I didn't. It's a great blend of quality, usability, and functionality. I wish more products were like this.

Excellent red flashlight, Great for astronomy or flying
This is an excellent flashlight for any night operation where maintaining night vision is important. The on/off switch on the end of the flashlight can be rotated to continuously vary the intensity from bright to very dim. The shroud at the front of the flashlight can be moved in and out to vary the diameter of the beam. It also has an attached lanyard should you care to use it. The power cell uses 3 AAA batteries which puts out a strong beam. I would gladly buy this brand again should I be so unfortunate as to lose or break this light--at my age I am much more likely to lose this light since I honestly doubt that I could ever break it. The tube and moving parts are aluminum but the lens is plastic. However, the shroud offers the lens ample protection from being damaged. Yes, I highly recommend this flashlight if you are interested in astronomy, flying, or any night activity where preservation of night vision is important.

Surprised how good it was!
I was surprised how great the quality of this product was. For $25 I expected much less. However, the build quality was on par with flashlights that cost much more. The fit and finish were well machined. The red light is bright and the dimming featured is steady and slow. The focus is tight and just what's needed. It did not come with batteries but can't co.plain for the price. If you need a red flashlight for hunting or camping this is it. The tail cap button makes it tactical as well. 5 stars all the way!

Not dim enough
The light itself is working well and seems to be well made. It is dimmable but not to the point at which I could use it to read star charts and observe faint distant galaxies (faint fuzzies).
