High quality scoop
High quality scoop with wooden handle. So much better than a trowel for scooping mulch or compost. Happy customer.

good soil scoop - but carbon steel may be prone to rusting in the longer term
This is a nicely made soil scoop. It's nice and deep so it can pick up a good amount of soil. I like that the edges are not sharp at all so it feels very safe to use unlike previous scoops I've seen in the past. It looks like a carefully made product - no sharpness anywhere at all! A sign of good quality. The handle is made of ash wood that's been nicely sanded so is beautifully smooth and pleasant to hold. The shape of the handle fits comfortably in my hand, so using this feels good. The scoop is made of carbon steel. I understand that carbon steel is stronger and more durable than stainless steel so is more resistant to breaking or bending. Carbon steel is also said to be slightly lighter than stainless steel, and indeed this soil scoop has a comfortable weight to it - not too heavy, so won't lead to hand fatigue. The one negative of carbon steel is that I understand it has more of a tendency to rust and corrode than stainless steel. So I'll be sure to dry this scoop carefully after use if it gets wet. Apparently with regular cleaning and oiling, you can prevent rust, but it's more work. I understand that using a rusty carbon steel trowel for vegetable gardening is generally not recommended for food safety since rust may potentially harbour bacteria, so keeping this soil scoop non-rusty seems like a good way to go when intending to use it for vegetable gardening. If this does get rusty, it is recommended to remove the rust using a wire brush, steel wool or sandpaper. Vinegar or baking soda can also be used to remove rust. After cleaning, oiling with mineral oil or linseed oil can be done to prevent future rusting. Storing it in a clean, dry place also helps.

Spear & Jackson 4055NB Elements Soil Scoop
Well made solid tool. I wish I'd got this before I wasted my time and money on cheap plastic scoops that broke if dealing with anything hard. Perfect shape as well.

so much easier than using little hand shovels to fill up pots. the heightened sides help keep the soil from spilling over the sides so you end up with less mess
