Ever wanted to be a hapless alchemy apprentice? Now you can!
Created by Pillbox Games, this card game casts you as a hapless alchemy apprentice trapped in a whirl of nasty hexes and curious remedies. The goal is simple in theory: cure your afflictions before anyone else while gleefully afflicting your friends with new curses because nothing says friendship like a face full of spores. The game shines with its lively "take that" mechanics and fast, accessible play making it a perfect filler or party game. With its grotesque yet whimsical artwork and imaginative card lore from exploding flowers to extra arms the theme is as hilarious as it is absurd turning every turn into a story worth laughing over and occasionally grimacing at in equal measure. Gameplay flows like a bubbling potion: draw a couple of cards, cure one hex, or unleash a side effect that gives your opponents a headache and possibly a mild existential crisis. The extra alchemy actions add just enough tactical spice while the constant interaction and playful side effects ensure every turn is a little unpredictable and a lot of fun. It works beautifully for two to eight players and while smaller groups feel a little gentler larger groups are a delightful mess of hexes and mishaps that would make even the sanest wizard raise an eyebrow. Hex Effects excels in humour, interaction, and style. The "take that" elements add lively tension without ever feeling truly malicious. Its reliance on card draws keeps the game unpredictably entertaining and the lighter strategic depth makes it an inviting experience for both new and seasoned players. The combination of laughter, narrative flair, and fast chaotic gameplay make it a charming potion of fun guaranteed to leave players cackling, groaning, and perhaps questioning their life choices all at once.

This game is a lot of fun and easy to learn! My copy had two dues hex machina cards in it that were exclusive to Kickstarter. Had to look up how to use them since they weren't in the directions. During my search of the rules for the card, Pillbox games released a statement that the cards rule was in the instructions but not included in the game lol. I just found that funny lol. The card quality is great! Will definitely be looking to get their other game.

A simple, yet fun game that is good for friends and family. It's a great filler game or also for when you don't have a lot of time and just need to scratch that gaming itch! The production value of the box and cards is excellent. The cards feel and look like they have a linen finish.

Simple game but fun! We play it at least once every game night, weekly. Wish there were an expansion for it. Great quality construction, easy instructions, nice artwork and theme.

Very fun and simple game. We played Side Effects and thought this was a fun spin on that game. The only downside is that the developer released a B&N exclusive with bonus cards you can’t get otherwise. I’m not gonna rebuy the game just for that but it makes this version seem less than…
