Ok in not using a bias t. I'm powering through the usb plug. Hook up the dongle and the light goes out. What gives?

Depending on the exact setup, you may need to install a DC block between the SDR and SAWbird if NOT powering via bias tee. You can emulate this by putting a high quality capacitor in series with the signal line. is this the same as the sawbird+goes?

If i power a sawbird using the bias tee from a smartee sdr: does the sawbird filter dc to antenna? or will i need to use a separate dc block?
