Another win from Altra!
The Escalante 4 are the second pair of Altra trainers that I own and thankfully these are just as good as the first pair. The level of comfort from these shoes are a massive part of the overall reason why I like the brand. The wider fit and more natural shape to the shoe, does an excellent job of supporting the foot and avoiding cramping, especially when wearing a thicker material sport sock. Whilst these trainers do an excellent job when used for sporting activity, I use them on a daily basis for work. They look great with a pair of jeans as part of a smart/casual dress code, and their perfect for walking through town of a lunchtime, or even walking home after work. They're versatility in that regard make them an ideal shoe choice for a daily wear, as well as an activity-only sport shoe. The brand speaks for itself and the Escalante 4 are an excellent addition to their line-up. An easy one to recommend.

Fantastic Multi-coloured Sneakers, Shape & Fit, Comfort, Support, Aesthetic & Performance
Presentation The ALTRA Men's Escalante 4 Sneakers arrived packaged in a for purpose and branded cardboard box. Inside the box was a branded tissue paper wrapper which served to cover and protect the sneakers during transportation, and also presented the contents very stylishly. I had owned a dark blue pair of this same sneaker so I was aware of their outstanding build and comfort. First Impressions Out of the packaging, the sneakers looked very sleek with a sporty aesthetic. The sneakers are very lightweight, with a mid-blue and turquoise knit styled top which has the ALTRA logo flash in orange & blue branding on the inside and outside of the foot. The lacing up top is in a flat lace format in the same mid-blue as the sneakers, and threads through a reinforced set of lace holes and loops on the tongue which serve to keep everything nice and tight. The sole is in the contrasting turquoise colour and a low level design – not deep and over bouncy which I do not like as I believe this softens the foot – and has a alternating pattern of orange, mid-blue and turquoise blocks as tread. Build/finish and materials are all outstanding and I could find no fault with any aspect of the sneakers. Day To Day Use Since I owned a pair of these ALTRA sneakers in a different colour I knew what to expect, and they did not disappoint. I was smitten by the fit and comfort they provided and after wearing them for an hour or so I hardly knew they were on my feet such is the comfort from the lightweight design. The shape of the shoes is excellent as it follows the natural contour of the foot and supports a wide foot like mine perfectly. I wore them as a casual sneaker to acclimatise my feet with the sneakers before running in them, but when I did I was very impressed with them as a running sneaker. They feel both supportive and sturdy despite their lightweight design and they let me feel the ground beneath me unlike some thicker soled running sneakers I have owned. Summing Up I have to say that I had not heard of this brand but am now on my second pair and alternate between them, I’m very impressed with them and I think this brand might just be my new favourite for sneakers. Love the shape and fit, comfort, support, aesthetic and performance as a running sneaker. They may be a little pricey compared to some but they are definitely worth having on your radar if you want sneakers that stand out or just perform. Recommended.

Very comfortable, wears fast
Very comfortable for everyday wear, have bought a second pair. The only issue is that Altra aren’t really that sturdy - the sole wears fairly fast and the inner heel fabric wears through. Have had to put sticky heel protectors in. The lost star is for value for money.

Great for Running
If these running shoes were the only shoe from Altra's range I'd describe them as a promising up-and-coming brand for performance shoes. They're flat-heeled so it's significantly easier to run with good form (specifically midsole first), so once you get over the initial learning curve of unlearning your bad habits (ahem, heel striking) - you should notice that you're recovering faster and potentially even covering longer distances. As for the lifespan on these running shoes, it's hard for me to say at this point. I've covered 14.7km in them so far and they're barely showing any signs of being worn. So it'd be reasonable to estimate that these will be good for a couple hundred miles. Weight wise, it's like you're wearing nothing at all. Seriously, they're a couple hundred grams AT MOST. These shoes make running extremely comfortable and they are a genuine joy to wear. Top marks.

Wide toe-box lightweight trainers for gym work and gentle running
These trainers are an interesting hybrid of traditional running shoe and a wide toe-box ‘barefoot’ shoe. From the side they could easily pass for a regular trainer, but observed from above they are clearly not. The overall build feels really good with consistency around the joins and no messy finishes that I could see. They are nice and lightweight although one should bear in mind that they are mostly fabric outer so won’t have a whole lot of insulation (for cold weather) or waterproofing (for inclement weather). The toe-box is the main selling point here as it is very spacious. If you’ve got wide feet you’ll appreciate that width - although they are ‘normal’ towards the rear of the shoe. So if your feet are wide at the heel as well you might find these a bit snug in places. Overall, I’m enjoying mixing-in these trainers with my others as they do give me a different feel and allow my toes to spread out more. They are fairly cushioned so not so great for the more planted weight-training sort of routines, but for other activities in the gym they are a great option.

Top quality
The shape of these trainers immediately strikes the uninitiated like me as odd. They widen out out at the toes so the shape looks very strange indeed. However this is something of a design feature and although I don’t personally need that these are really comfortable and lovely to wear. I wouldn’t run in these as there isn’t enough cushioning for me, but they are comfortable to wear and look great. The sizing is accurate to generous - I’m usually 10.5 and the 10s fit well and there was a bit of room around my toes. Excellent quality shoes which will get a lot of wear.

Brilliant trainers
Very comfortable shoes. I was worried they wouldn't fit me as I have very large feet but they did. It took a little adjusting of the laces and making sure the tongue was pulled all the way up and hey presto, my new favourite pair of trainers.

Unbelievably Comfortable & Lightweight - But At A Price
Altra isn’t a brand known to me but after a google search I found they also manufacture other well known US brands that I do know. They arrived in nicely presented but understated shoe box. On closer inspection I could see that they were extremely well finished and a I really nice design close up. To be fair I would expect that to be the case at this price point (£124.99 at the time of the review) They do look really nicely made with a lot of attention to detail. They have the feel of a trainer but feel really solid at the same time. They are soft and really stretchy and give a lot, and shaped for a better fit, extremely lightweight and extremely comfortable. I really love the larger toe box design as I have an arthritis in my right big toe and some trainers put pressure on it and aren't that comfortable. No problem at all with these they fit like a glove although they are on my feet : ). I do a lot of walking everyday around 3 - 4 miles just to get some fresh air and exercise and wow, these have been unbelievably comfortable and lightweight I barely feel I have them on they are so feather light. They also have a very decent grippy sole. I wore them recently on a fairly hilly 6.5 mile walk and a flatfish 5.8 mile walk on another day and was impressed with just how comfortable were. Both were reasonably warm days (19°) and although my feet warm they were never hot. I think the woven mesh style material and knitted tongue design helps with moderating heat and stops tightness around that area as they are very forgiving. They will definitely be my go-to walking trainers from now on. They also look nice wearing with my jeans. In summary great looking and unbelievably comfortable trainers a definite winner for me but they are very expensive , so lose a star. That said they are comparable in terms of price with other well known what are considered premium brands.
