Black Snow - worth reading
Beautifully written book. It is a slow read and not at all uplifting but you learn so much about a different way of life. The characters live very much off the land and are directly impacted by all negatives in the environment; they are very complex characters.I recommend this book.

because the basic story is pretty bleak.
Very well written -- which helped, because the basic story is pretty bleak.

Dark tale and a bit nostalgic. Beautiful story.
This is one that will leave you thinking. Well rounded characters that you get to know intimately, especially if you have siblings. It's a well written story, chilling and brutal and also so human and touching. I would recommend this to anyone who needs some enlightened reading.

love and tragedy
Hardship, helplessness, love and tragedy, - all felt in the gut. The language and dialect are portraits of Donegal countryside, as are the strangeness of human misunderstandings. As written, Barnabas did all he knew how to do.

Fantastic read for anyone into Cormac McCarthy
Fantastic read for anyone into Cormac McCarthy, or James Joyce. Black Snow is a perfect marriage of southern gothic and Irish styles of literature.

".....there are things in this life that are outside our purview"
A worthy successor to Thomas Hardy. If you search for answers, you shall not find them here but if you want to explore the darker sides of human existence, this is your book!

Simply stunning. A masterpiece. so evocative, so painful.
This was impossible to put down. So truly Irish, so poetic, so sad and incredibly moving. I commend it wholeheartedly.

Couldn't finish it--too bad.
I loved Lynch's first book, but The Black Snow was slow going and I decided not to finish it (after about a quarter of the way through). I quickly found the style mannered and slow. The subject matter itself is very compelling, as with the last book. He has an eye and ear for the darkness in everyday life. But I found myself restarting over and over again, feeling held back by the style.I liked Red Sky enough that I really regret not liking this one.

The Black Snow
