Lava® Lamp - 14.5'' Vinyl Record Grooved Base - The Original Motion Light - Yellow Wax and Orange Liquid - Item #2017

Lamp arrived in perfect condition. Liquid is perfectly clear (orange in this case) not cloudy at all. No dents in the base. I saw several negative reviews before purchase. Please understand what you are buying when you purchase a Lava lamp. They look really cool, but they take HOURS to heat up enough for the wax to flow. It uses a small 25 watt bulb to heat the liquid inside. The lamp itself gets hot. If you follow the directions inside, you have a good quality cool looking lamp.

Lava lamps are not a normal light. You have to know what you’re getting into before you have and use one. There are days and hours that I make a conscious decision not to turn it on, won’t be on long enough or might neglect it. These need literally a few hours to get going, but if you were to leave it all day, it will start to crisp up and get ruined (as a teen, I had two and ruined one by being on too long). I got the original and thought it seemed a little smaller than I had wanted but the look, quality, and function have all been great.

The lava does not flow like it should. I did everything according to the directions and still does not work properly. I would not have purchased this item knowing what I know now. Sorry. Horrible product.

My oldest son wanted a lava lamp and this was perfect! His favorite color is yellow and he loved the record groove detailing. The first time it took around 4-5 hours for the lava to work but once it did it was awesome to watch! Definitely recommend this one! The yellow is a nice warm ambient light.

The 25 watt light bulb produces the heat required to make the lamp wax rise and very pretty. The light bulb also heats the base. My guess is about 140F. I put a large heat resistant coaster underneath the base to prevent possibility of the heat affecting my wooden end table. This is the second lava lamp I have ordered and both bases get hot. Enjoy.

Overall, the lamp works as advertised — no issues with functionality. The wax flows nicely, and the heating element seems reliable. However, I have a few Chinese lava lamps at home that are noticeably better in a few ways, despite being cheaper. First, they come with built-in dimmers, which allow you to control the brightness and the behavior of the wax — a feature I really miss here. Second, the body of those lamps feels sturdier and more aesthetically pleasing. This one has a very thin, soft aluminum casing that feels a bit flimsy by comparison. Maybe the wax formula here is superior or longer-lasting — time will tell — but at this price point, I expected more. Not a bad product, just not better than cheaper options.

Amazing lamp, it was delivered clear and warmed up nice and normally after a while and i haven’t had any problems with the wax or base since. The flow is excellent

I am reviewing this as if it is all colors of lava lamps. The reason for this is that I have purchased 6 or 7 of these over the last 20 years. I will get to that portion of the review after this paragraph...but first..... ....I received this particular lamp last week and it is the first lamp of the 6 or 7 I've purchased over the years (since the early 2000s) that came without cloudy liquid! It works perfectly and it looks beautiful. The one thing I will say is that the orange liquid really is not orange. It's yellow. No biggie, I like the black vinyl inspired base and cap as I am a vinyl collector. Now onto the rest of the review. I am giving Lava Lamps as a whole 2 stars. Here is why: The vast majority of these lamps come cloudy. I haven't had issues with the light bulbs not working properly or arriving broken. I can only assume how annoying that is, but probably an easy fix just swapping out the bulb...still though, not something you should have to do when you're paying 30+ bucks for these. And I don't know what they did to the formula when they shipped manufacturing overseas, but when I was younger I had one that was manufactured here in the States and I had a few friends with them. You could also go to Spencer's Gifts and see these things all fired up over there...there were zero cloudy lamps. All of them worked perfectly unless you had somebody shake them up. That being said....Thankfully there are people out there that have found solutions to these clouds...there are ways to fix the lamps. So instead of many multiple returns/exchanges, as a DIYer I just fix the problem, but would rather not have had to go this route. So buyers beware! It is going to be hit or miss when you purchase one of these. You might get a good one....you probably won't. Maybe I'm wrong, but unless you like cloudy lava lamps, you're probably going to be disappointed. And with all the reviews I'm seeing from people that had to deal with broken bulbs...maybe have some extras on hand just to be safe(?)...though like I said, I've never had those issues.
