the lid off the worlds most brutal dictator
One of Robert Duvall's finest roles. Based on a true story, this film covers the life and times of Joseph Stalin from the revolution in 1917, when he first started to plot and murder his way to absolute power, to his death in the early 50s. Over the next few decades, tens of millions would die. Millions would be imprisoned. No one dared defy his orders or question his methods. Even friends and family would not be safe from his reign of terror. There is no getting round the fact Duvall is chillingly realistic in the role and was well worth his Golden Globe award as was Maximilian Schell as the ailing Lenin. Good support from Daniel Massey as Trotsky, and Roshan Seth as the evil Lavrentri Beria. So, if the subject material is your cup of tea, you are in for a treat

left a lot to be desired
I am not a student of history, but I can clearly recall that Stalin signed a non-agression pact with Hitler in 1939 (Ribbentrop/Molotov) and proceeded to carve up Poland between them. He was fooled into believing Germany would never invade Russia. He was wrong. This was not mentioned in the film. In addition, Stalin's relationship with Churchill and Rosevelt during their meetings in the course of the Second World War were also omitted (he ran rings around them). Any biography which references none of these events lacks credibility. I don't care how good Robert Duval is in the film, you would be better off buying a book.

Tour de Force
This film shows the amazing talent of Robert Duvall, acting the leading role, who first came to wide public attention in the Godfather, part 1. Also deserving full credit are the make-up department who worked wonders on Duvall's facial appearancc. I can't say if his performance was like Stalin himself, but it conveyed a clear impression of a powerful, single minded, ruthless and implacable leader of the Soviet Union, whom some people regarded as insane. At three and a half hours long, the film is never tedious, always fascinating, and the supporting cast are all utterly convincing. What it illustrates from a historical perspective is the crimes that a political leader can carry out, once he has his hands on limitless power. It calls to mind in this respect, Adolf Hitler and Polpot, to name but two. The film is a real credit to everyone involved in its introduction to the screen, and should be a compulsory viewing for all sixth form pupils in schools.

good movie
This movie is more about Stalins dealings with his cohorts than it is about his external dealings. Very little if any time is given to world war two or his life after it. The movie concentrates on his rise to power and his family circle. Duval plays the role well however i would question his voicing of stalin having heard newsreels with Stalin speaking. The actor who portrays lavrenti beria looks nothing like beria and was a very poor choice for the role. The production is a collection of individual scenes of stalins dealings with various military and family members but does not venture outside this comfort zone to include any international dealings during world war 2. overall a good if limited portrayal of stalin

To tell the truth I would not have recognized Duvall in the role he played as Stalin. Nevertheless he did a masterful job even had the Russian/Georgian accent down to a certain degree. Ive seen this film several times which enabled me to know who all the major and minor characters were. Now I feel I have a better grasp of Russian history during this turbulent period of the revolution and Stalin's reign. Of course as most films go its not 100 percent accurate but comes close and the viewer will get a lesson of Russian history during the first half of the 20th century. Like the other reviews it hurriedly moves over "The Great Patriotic War" in just a few scenes. The film will also help reveal that Stalin was worst mass murderer in the 20th century or even of all time which most people assume that honor goes to Adolf Hitler. This is known as the other "holocaust" which is lot less known then the Jewish one of Nazi Germany. I would highly reccomend the film to any enthusiast of Russian history and see how the Russian people suffered during Stalins reign.

Of course, Duvall is always great! This movie, more than anything I've viewed, made me feel like I had a window in on the man and horror of Stalin.
