Somewhat Brief, and Personal, But Worthwhile
What I most appreciated about this book was the author's positive and encouraging tone, and her constant stress that there is no one "right" way for a transgendered person to be, that it is okay to cross-dress occasionally, or to transition to living as a woman full-time. Similarly, with GRS (genital reassignment surgery), it is okay to go that route or not, depending on one's wishes. She only lapsed one time into unnecessary judgment, and that was a disparaging remark she made about some "shemales" who practice prostitution. I don't really care what Ms. Seeley thinks about prostitution, and I think her disparaging remark about it detracts from her otherwise very accepting, encouraging and open-minded book. In general I think she does a good job of covering, if briefly, all the important topics related to male-to-female transitioning. I do think that at $19 the book is somewhat overpriced given that it is only 198 pages. I also think the book could have been strengthened by adding a bibliography or Recommended Books & Videos appendix. I also would have appreciated more information about the GRS (or SRS) surgery and its aftermath, particularly some information about the percentage of transwomen who end up non-orgasmic afterward. While Seeley did show the down side of having the surgery, she did not really indicate any corresponding down side to *not* having the surgery, and this reader would have appreciated more than 2-3 pages on this important topic. From my own discussions with at least one pre-op transwoman, hormones can reduce libido. One woman told me years ago that she was always cutting back on her hormones so that she could experience the libido she wanted, but it was a delicate balance because the hormones gave her more the bodily characteristics she desired. Ms. Seeley opted not to stay on hormones due to a medical complication, but for the majority of transsexuals post-transition who *do* go on hormones, this is undoubtedly an important issue that warrants some exploration in a book like this. I realize the book is a very *personal* perspective, but to me, the subtitle--"a Complete Guide to Becoming the Woman You Want to Be"--warrants a more in-depth, at times *less* personal approach to some of these subjects, particularly so in the case with SRS/GRS. Despite these caveats, Ms. Seeley's consistently encouraging, permission-giving tone is very constructive, and this is a worthwhile read for anyone considering transition.

I loved it
This is the 1st book that I have read after acknowledging that I am transgender. It focuses on positive reinforcement &encouragement to help you make the steps needed to discovering who you are and how to get there. As someone who was completely overwhelmed with confusion ,I can tell you that this book was wonderfully informative&a great choice for a 1st read on the subject. To be able to read the story of someone else who has gone through exactly what I'm going through &experiancing similar emotions was an empowering experience. Tips and 1st hand information on a large variety of topics are plentiful. All in all ,I was delighted with choosing this book, and it was a great read.

Lots of good advice
This is kind of like having a trans friend who has been out for a while, sharing her personal experience and advice. A lot of it is spot on, and you'll want to hold on to it for future reference. I'm going to go back and read it all a second time so I can put flags on those pages with specific, detailed recommendations.

Very Helpful
This book is exactly what it says it is, a companion! Very well written and an excellent guide. If you are just beginning your transition or are early on in it, this is for you. It is very helpful. I transitioned years ago and wanted to see if this was something helpful for our sisters just beginning and I was happy with it. It reminded me of all that I had gone through and all that our sisters just starting will go through. It is encouraging and a must read. Thank you Jennifer Seely for writing this book.

someone else criticized it for not being detailed enough but I would say its pretty obvious it is an overview
Jennifer Seeley seems very kind and empathetic. For example, while providing practical career/job advice and financing/surgeries/etc. she was considerate of people who had less education/opportunity than her, and offered advice for them too. Her less practical encouraging stuff was very helpful and seem to be read by others as well as me during a time that we could use encouragement. someone else criticized it for not being detailed enough but I would say its pretty obvious it is an overview. I would say some info is outdated and general so make sure to do independent detailed research online about any specific step, especially medical things. I would say not to be so scared by her story about hormones, if your doctor is monitoring your cholesterol etc. regularly it shouldn't happen. (not medical advice and not always true)

Read it and it was a big help.
In this book are personal ideas and facts gathered from the journey. It is a personal outlook and it contains a lot of great information, but the thing to remember is it is not a roadmap for your journey. It is not a checklist where you have to check off all the boxes, you have to figure out what is right for you. What others do and are having success with may not apply to your circumstance so be aware you make your own decisions and have to have a better understanding of your life and your circumstances. It is a fine book, well written and has much to offer as ADVICE, and advice is not commands or orders. the thing about advice is you can take it and you can choose not to take it. Proceed with caution, weigh and measure, consider the options and consider the consequences. You will not go wrong with reading this book or having loved ones read it to understand more.

The book was ok but it was missed out of the book are questions about what do you do if you have been refused the medical pathway and what do you do to get back this was a bit disappointing for me because it didn't say how to convince the gender clinic that you want to be the other gender
