The Power Fin can be used in salt water or fresh water. We would advise rinsing the item with fresh water when finished no matter where you use it.

How fast is this compared to a trolling motor?

I've been using this on my board all season. I'm not sure of the exact speed, but on level 3 it moves at a good clip, nearly as fast I can paddle. It's a great way to extend you range on paddles - you don't need to worry if the wind is going to kick up.
