It worked, even with a couple of caveats
It actually works! Now if you're reading this, you dread bonfire night(s) and taking the dog anywhere in the car. Short of building an underground bunker, or booking a holiday in the centre of Iceland, we really struggle with ours. We never fancied the drugs option from the vets, so we tried Adaptil plug in diffusers for the house.....Nah! Nada, nothing, no effect whatsoever. So we got a travel spray, initially for bonfire night. Sprayed her internal crate, and I mean SPRAY the crate, forget the guidelines, you can't poison them with this. The dog went in on her own accord and actually was trying to sleep! First time ever! Wasn't perfect, and it was still challenging, but every little helps, right? Soooooo, car travel time came. Usual panting and body shaking, and we gave her travel crate a good blast of spray......She went straight in and settled down! Blimey! You had to be there! 3 hour journey of which it was EASILY the least traumatic ever! Sure, she got up a couple of times and started panting. But it only lasted a few minutes and she went back to sleep. I've ordered 2 more, and intend to keep a regular supply. I don't normally bother with reviews, but those of you who know what it's like, might just want to give this a shot. It ain't cheap, but you can't put a price on seeing something you care about, being settled. Hope this helps some of you.

3 Stars for Impact, 0 for Safety: My Verdict on Adaptil Transport Spray
This review outlines the evolution of my travel strategy: The spray that once gave us portable calm now feels like a risky compromise. I am moving beyond Adaptil in 2026 to protect my dogs and the very air we all breathe. After my dog suffered a leg injury in 2024, car travel became a significant trigger for her; the journeys began "setting her up" for stressful vet visits. She would pant, her eyes were wide with fright, and her back was arched tight. The breakthrough came when I tried spraying a bandana with Adaptil 15–30 minutes before departure. The transformation was undeniable. Her spine levelled, her face softened, and she began to sniff the floor calmly. Seeing her "check in" with the scent and relax during those difficult vet visits made me a firm believer in this portable "calm bubble." The 2026 wake-up call: Horrified by the risks However, as we move through 2026, my perspective has shifted. The new information I have uncovered regarding the ingredients in these products has left me absolutely horrified. Realising that protecting her "peace" meant exposing her - and our entire family - to harsh chemical carriers leaves me with an intense feeling of guilt. Now that I know better, I have to do better. I have stopped using the spray in favour of non-toxic alternatives. While my "aha" moment about the power of pheromones was impactful, I can no longer ignore the health and safety risks inherent in the Adaptil Transport Spray: The driver's risk: The spray relies on isopropanol (isopropyl alcohol), which is explicitly warned to cause drowsiness or dizziness if inhaled. I dread to think what could have happened if I had inhaled these fumes while driving; the thought of being compromised behind the wheel is terrifying. Respiratory hazards for dogs: Isopropanol is roughly twice as toxic as ethanol to dogs. For a creature with a sense of smell thousands of times more sensitive than ours, forcing them to breathe these vapours inside a car feels utterly reckless. Petrochemical hazards: Adaptil uses isoparaffinic hydrocarbons (petroleum distillates). These are lethal if swallowed because and since they can enter the lungs they can cause severe chemical pneumonia. Specialist disposal & toxicity: This solution is toxic to aquatic life and the environment. It must not be thrown in household waste - a major red flag for any domestic pet product. The expensive "hit or miss": At around £22 per bottle, Adaptil Travel Spray is costly experiment for pet parents, especially since scientific reviews now categorise the evidence for its effectiveness as weak to moderate. A plea to the manufacturer I am calling on the makers of Adaptil to reformulate this spray into a truly safe, alcohol-free and petroleum-free version. Pet guardians deserve to help their dogs travel without the fear of respiratory irritation, environmental harm, or driver impairment. Please, give us a non-toxic alternative that prioritises wellness over industrial convenience. My "layered calm" strategy: Building on our bond I have replaced synthetic sprays with a "multi-layered" approach that builds directly on the bond I have with my dogs. We now create a sanctuary of calm during travel using our relationship as the anchor: The "safety scent" & tactile anchor: Instead of chemicals, I use a T-shirt I’ve recently worn to provide a familiar scent. We also use the Snuggle Puppy Heartbeat Toy (ASIN: B000C9YHFS) for tactile comfort and biological reassurance. Bio-acoustic therapy: We play music specifically engineered for dogs, such as Through a Dog's Ear (ASIN: 1591796423) or The Mozart Effect: From Playtime to Sleepytime (ASIN: B00000DA1O). Active adrenaline release: Before and after every journey, we do a short walk or light play session. This is essential to burn off adrenaline and prevent stress from "stacking" before vet visits. Reward-based desensitisation: We spent time playing with and feeding our puppies in the car with the engine off. This rewired their emotional response to the vehicle itself. We then repeated the games with the engine on, and gradually increased the length of journeys, ensuring the dogs did not show signs of stress such as panting, whining, or lip licking before progressing. Critical Safety Instructions: DO NOT SPRAY THIS DIRECTLY ON YOUR PET. It is a chemical irritant not designed for direct contact. DO NOT STAY IN THE SAME ROOM as bedding or bandanas that have just been sprayed. You must leave the room for at least 15–30 minutes to allow the alcohol carrier to fully evaporate. A Note on Clinical Care: Some dogs have profound anxiety that requires medical intervention. If your dog is extremely anxious, suffers from travel sickness, or is a "non-responder" to pheromones and training, please consult with a vet. Only a veterinary professional can diagnose or safely prescribe medications for your pet. Final thought I’m grateful for the relief Adaptil once provided, but I’m more grateful for the knowledge I have now. Our dogs trust us to keep them safe - I’m choosing to keep our travel air clear and their calm rooted in our bond.

No more being sick in car
My dog is not a good traveler in the car. Is sick every time even short journey. I bought this hoping it would help him. Could not believe the difference it makes. Can now travel with the dog in car. He still gets a bit anxious so I don’t feed him before we go on a journey. Spray it on his blanket 20-30 minutes before we travel and he has been brilliant. Could not live without this. Has no strong smell and works quickly. Good quality product.

Don't bother
If I could give zero, I would. Didn't even work slightly for my labrador in the car despite using most of the bottle. I had high hopes but was sadly disappointed

5*
I was skeptical after reading reviews. I thought the reviews that say it doesn’t work, would be the same for my dogs. Well, I am pleasantly surprised. I’ve got two collies who get very anxious with fireworks and loud bangs. I’ve had them on the adaptil calming chews along with this spray and what a difference! Two very relaxed collies. Highly recommend and much cheaper than the vets ‘Sileo’.

Not effective for our dog
Didn't have any effect on our dog who is a nervous traveller. It was an expensive experiment, but might work for your dog. Shame we weren't able to buy a little trial size first.

Great for anxious dogs, perhaps not a smaller dose (we sprayed it a little less than normal}
A ,little strong for our dogs, but used less the next time & it worked. Thank you

Je n'ai constaté aucun changement de comportement de mon chien avec et sans. Ne fonctionne pas sur mon chien ( Beagle de 30kg)

seems to help for small periods of time - the alcohol smell is quite strong at first, but wears off about 5-10 mins after spraying

A beaucoup soulagé mon chien en voiture qui était pourtant très agité
