Watchmen, International Edition : Moore, Alan, Gibbons, Dave: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: The greatest graphic novel ever - It’s all there in the title, there’s nothing to say that hasn’t already been said. Just know you won’t regret reading. Review: Absolutely stunning, a magnum opus - The item: the book is made in classic paperback, some 450 pages long. Quality is like a standard textbook you find at school; regular paper, no frills or adornments. The colour printing is good without bleeding, the black/white sections are also well rendered. The book contains the actual story as well as a whole bunch of sketches and commentaries by Dave Gibbons and others. The story: this is one of the best epic comics I have ever read. In case you are thinking about watching the movie first, I'd advice you read this book first since the twist ending is spectacular. If you have seen the movie already, you will find this book follows that story pretty closely, with some additional side-plots and backstories not covered in the film. The conclusion is also a bit different as the book contains an epilogue of sorts. The quality is undeniable: each panel tells a story, their wonderful details revealing one layer after another, subtly letting the reader take in the impressions piece by piece. You can study each panel separately and drown in the details - it's the kind of book you can read again and again, discovering new details every time. Some times, a panel's text will be connected with the next, despite the next panel showing a different scene. You will know what I mean when you read it. Because you will read it. If you are a fan of comics, which I take it you are if you bother reading reviews about one, you must read it.

Simply brilliant graphic novel right up there with Maus and Jimmy Corrigan in quality
A brilliant book, right up there in quality with Maus by Speigelman and Jimmy Corrigan by Ware: a superb graphic novel. The film is the best superhero movie ever, which isn't saying a lot admittedly, but certain of the most stunning aspects of the book are missing from the film. These are for instance the brilliant parallel comic story that runs through the frames of the actual story in the book, commenting on the story too, and the extracts from Hollis Mason's autobiography. The film can't fit either of these things but can find SPACE to give Dr. Manhatten a much big d**k than in the book. The film does actually have a stronger finish though as that of the book is unfocussed, over-wordy and suddenly out-of-character incredible. It doesn't matter though as the rest of this thick volume is simply brilliant. Something I love about the book is how little superhero action there is. Hardly any pages are given over to superhero fighting and in between these, the book is full of writing that illuminates the characters of these characters rather than being full of padding (walking at fast pace) like for instance a typical Jason Bourne film.

If you haven't read it....Why?
The best graphic novel ever written. (Apart from the outstanding Sandman comics by Neil Gaiman, different genres though). Extremely complex, full to the brim with subtle symbolism, an intertwining story that somehow manages to cover EVERYTHING. The story: As i said, this story covers everything. It manages to keep a very important and thoughtful story relevant throughout and still has time to include each character's origin. Which also link into the larger story, it's amazing. It is a very dark book though, expect some very intelligent themes and writing. Alan Moore manages to make every character key to the story, be it a boy reading a comic by the street every day, to Dr Manhattan, a neon force of nature. Each character represents a thought, or an idea that can be interpreted freely yet has a clear meaning. The story deals in shades of grey and less black and white, a thinking man's book for sure. Art: Very clean and crisp, I love this kind of art. Not overly flashy, but simple and effective. It serves the story perfectly as the story isn't action and explosions throughout. Overall: 12/10...Yes...Really. I had unbelievably high expectations after reading 1000's of reviews. Yet I was still blown away. I only wish more comics tried to do something as good as this. My only regret was not buying the Hardcover. :(

Greatest graphic novel
What's there to say that has not already been said about this masterpiece. I first read it in the 90's and was blown away. Same effect today. The characters are deeply touching and Moore is at his genius best here. A couple of panels just bring home strongly what the characters are thinking, feeling and striving for. Even little cameos like the kid reading a pirate comic come across strongly. Different characters are portrayed so well that it is as if eight people were writing this novel, each articulating what a particular character is saying. The artwork is sublime and fits the script beautifully. Quite simply if you like comics you have to get Watchmen. It's simply the best.

Man - grim
It's remarkable the extent to which we've accepted 'grimdark' in our modern superhero narratives, and how even the darkest superhero reboots is miles away from the sheer, unremitting bleakness of Watchmen. This is a world where the heroes are fascists and the fascists are politicians - where the great American heroes are steeped in blood and murder and lauded for it. It's a timely read, given the political context of the times. While I can't really comment on the art of it (I'm not nearly enough of a fan of graphic novels to have much of a view on it) the writing is sharp and the story profound. Who do you root for in a tale where the only difference between the good guys and the bad guys is their motivations? Rorschach is a masterpiece of a character - one that fills the same narrative role that his namesake does in the visual space. What you see in Rorschach tells you a lot about yourself. Watchmen is not a fun read, but it's an absorbing one and well worth your time.

The best graphic novel ever made?
I haven't read all the graphic novels ever written, so maybe this isn't the best one. But it is the yardstick we judge by. Nobody argues about that.

not much i can say about this masterpiece that hasn't already been said. i love it to bits, you know it's fantastic, alan moore is a genius, we get it. as for the edition itself, the book came in excellent condition, the artwork looks stunning, and the extra features add to the Watchmen experience. the cover art is also my favorite version of the trade paperback, though that's a matter of personal preference. overall, great purchase of a great edition of a great read.
