Sangean PS-300 Pillow Speaker with In-line Volume Control and Amplifier (White)

I've been using these pillow speakers for many years. They work well and sound great. They have a volume control which makes it easy to adjust the volume rather than have to adjust the volume on your phone or other device it may be plugged into. A slight negative is that after years of use the wires become a little stiff and sometimes fray. Otherwise I will give them 5 Stars.

April 27,2021 My first.....only....review of anything. This is a very good product. Not perfect, perhaps....because of the thin wire connections between the base and the volume control. However, that can be delt with. It may seem annoying to have to do this, however, it is worth it. When you first receive your pillow speaker, remove it from the package carefully. straighten out the wires, plug it in, and test the sound and volume control. Be very careful in handling the wire where it is connected to the BASE ....speaker, and also, the volume control. After testing to confirm that it has SOUND and also good volume control, carefully apply TAPE to the wire where it connects to the speaker, and also, the volume control. Do NOT wrap the tape AROUND THE WIRE. Keep the tape flat against the wire and also where it CONNECTS into the speaker. Press gently against the tape to make certain that the tape completely "glues" against the wire and particularly against the entrance of the speaker. Make certain that the tape has a smooth flat bond against the wire and on over the top and bottom of the speaker. Add a few layers of tape.... to both the top side and "under side" of the wire and speaker. Make certain that you keep the tape FLAT. Again, carefully press and smooth the tape gently to remove any "air pockets" etc. . Add a few layers of tape to both sides gently pressing and making certain that the tape is stuck to the wire and the entrance of the edge of the speaker. I layered the tape to create a FLAT "blanket" on both sides of the tape and entrance to the speaker. I created a "patch" to hold the wire connection firmly in place where it enters the side of the speaker. The "tape patch" measures 1" x 1 1/2" . You can use any type of tape that you prefer. Just make certain that you create a firmly taped "blanket.....patch" to keep the wire from moving back and forth, where it connects to the speaker, and also where the wire connects to the VOLUME control. If the wire can't MOVE at these WEAK POINTS , the connections should last a long while. I am happy with my pillow speaker...and I purchased MORE for the future. You "never know" what the future may bring. Be prepared!! : ) : )

In the past 8 years I have owned two of these. They are great and the sound is very good. The battery life is also very good. The problem with them is the wires connecting to the 1/8 in plug eventually become disconnected and there is no way to cut them and wire the thing back together or even put another plug on them because the wires are the thinnest (about the size of a hair). Each of these seem to last about 3 1/2 to 4 years before this happens. Another thing that is quite annoying is the length of the cables (cords) whatever, between each of the three components. I don't know anyone who needs this much, which could easily spread completely across a king-size bed and have room to spare. Even though I like the product for how is works, I will never purchase it again.

Hello, This is Hugh, Carol's Hubbly Bubbly. I just purchased my second PS-300 pillow speaker with amplifier and volume control. I use my pillow speaker every night. I am either watching a movie on youtube or listening to the BBC . This speaker works very well and does not tisturb my wife. It works well with my android and my tablet as well as my portable radio. The speaker is quite thin and smooth and when positioned correctly I fell no discomfort having it under my pillow. The volume control and amplifier and battery compartment are in-line and close enough to the speaker that they are easy to access. The single AAA battery is for the amplifier only. The speaker will still function when the battery is discharged. But for youtube you will need to use the amplifier often as the volume level on Youtube is all over the scale. The speaker is also nice for listening to audio books. I have had my first PS-300 for years. And as it turns out, it still works really well. I just had a bad bunch of AAA batteries. But that's fine I will keep this one for a back-up. The battery life will depend on how much you use the amplifier and whether or not if you can remember to shut it off when finished. In closing I would say the PS-300 speaker is a very good value. The only suggestion I would make is when removing it from under your pillow do Not Tug on the wire, reach under the pillow and grab the speaker. I think that pretty much covers it, I hope someone finds this review helpful. Cheers

PLEASE BEWARE!!!!! This was a fabulous little speaker and I absolutely loved it for 3 weeks, then the booster went out and I could only get a low volume from the speaker. Called Sangean and they wanted me to pay a restocking fee to return the defective one and for me to pay the shipping fee for a replacement. After talking with George for a while he checked with his manager and said I didn't have to return the defective one or pay the restocking fee. He told me just to send a check for $6.00 to cover the shipping of a replacement unit (yes, I had to pay for the shipping). Two days later I sent a letter to George outlining the conversation we had over the phone and enclosed my check for $6.00. It has now been 3 weeks since I mailed my check, the check hasn't been cashed, and I don't have a replacement speaker. I've tried calling but somehow they always seem to be closed. Don't waste your money!!! Great little speaker but it should work for longer than 3 weeks. Customer service not any good either. UPDATE: Finally received my replacement speaker and it WORKS GREAT. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that my first speaker was just defective from the beginning. I hope my new one lasts longer than the first one because I really love this speaker. If you purchase this speaker and don't get a defective one I think you will be very happy with it. UPDATE #2: The replacement speaker I received as mentioned above was received on 12/28/16. It is now 5/18/17 and the amplifier on this speaker has now gone out. I've had almost 5 months of enjoyment out of this speaker. I can still listen to the speaker but without the amplifier you have to put the speaker on your ear to hear it. Apparently Sangean has a problem with their amplifiers. Hope they will improve them because I really love the speaker.

This is review #1. I read many negative reviews that say the product doesn't last long. I will write an update in 1 year to see if I agree or disagree. I have used it only one night so far. It is okay. The seller writes it measures: 4.75 x 7.75 x 2.5 in. This is an outright lie. Mine measures 3.875" (plus about .875" for the extended speaker wire before it bends) x 3.375" x 1". It is MUCH smaller than they claim. I THOUGHT I saw somewhere in the ad (or a review?) that it is only .5 thick. I can't find that comment. Maybe I am mixed up but it definitely is 1" thick. It is hard plastic. I can place it to the side of my head if I am laying on my back & it is good. I feel the uncomfortable hardness when I sleep on my side. I have a pillow that can make a dip in an area & I TRY to place it into that recessed area. That helps a LITTLE. One reviewer complained that the volume is too low & controlling it is hard. There are only 3 volume settings BUT YOU CAN STILL ADJUST THE VOLUME FROM THE RADIO. That wasn't an issue for me. Perhaps his/her volume on the radio is not adjustable? The warranty is a joke. They will replace a defective unit (that I paid about $8 for) if I send the unit back prepaid (money) & also pay a $8 handling charge. What if Chevy did the same? I can truck my car to Detroit at my expense & also pay them $5000 to fix it. WHAT KIND OF WARRANTY IS THAT? The warranty also mentions batteries TWICE. It has NO batteries. This is review # 2 (update): So far so good. It's been 3 months. It works ok. One reviewer said the cord breaks off after a short wile. It hasn't weakened so far. I can see how that happens as I turn in my sleep & give it mild abuse. There is a 3 way switch: 1: full sound 2) SLIGHTLY reduced sound. Maybe 95% of full sound. Not much of a reduction. 3) Almost but not quite a mute. Maybe 99% no sound. They could have an adjustable sound level. I can tune my radio higher or lower but that means getting up. I need more or less sound based on the show I am listening to. It is slightly hard on my head. I punch a low spot into my pillow & buffer it so my head is not laying on it. January 2019 update - The wire is breaking like it has for others. It has been about 9 months. I see it being said that the wires can get brittle with oils, etc. I doubt that. I think that the problem is I sleep & move about & the wire is bent a lot. I am not sure how to can avoid this. What I do not like is that the volume can't be adjusted FROM THE SPEAKER> I plug it into a radio that I can blast the volume. But listening to radio, you get various volumes from various shows or commercials. You want to turn it up or down FROM THE BED. You can't. The 3-way switch is a joke. This is only $8. I am going to order another. I am debating if I should order the $26 model that has a volume adjust inline. $26 for 9 months is a poor investment so I may just order the same thing.

Works great ! I can listen all night if I want to and my wife doesn't hear a thing!

I wanted a speaker to use for bedtime meditation, sleep sounds, music, etc. I didn’t want to wear anything, so I was excited to try this speaker. I also bought a Bluetooth receiver and plugged this to make it a Bluetooth speaker. The volume is great, but it also has a battery compartment to boost the volume. It has volume control in the cable, so it’s easy to raise or lower volume without having use the source device. I use it without a battery under my pillow and, depending on the source device, the maximum volume is loud enough for me to hear without disturbing my partner. There was one night when the source device was capable of transmitting at a higher volume and, at my standard speaker volume, it was loud enough to disturb my partner. If I’d thought about it, I could have turned it down to reduce the disruption. Overall this is a great product at a good price. Highly recommend, especially when connected to a Bluetooth receiver.
