⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
"These have knelled your fall and ruin, But your ears were far away English lassies rustling papers through the sodden Bletchley day." [Poem by Alfred Dillwyn 'Dilly' Knox, on the Matapan naval victory.] The verse will continue ringing through one's mind long after the read has been done with and the book has been clapped close. "War-time" or war-time reality is something quite different from what we contemplate it to be. Every aspect of a wartime social happening is essentially eons apart from how it would've happened in absence of a war-like situation. Amidst all the war-time savagery, bonds are forged, minds are made, and decisions are taken in momentary fits of heaving passion. Those are the times when one simply doesn't have the luxury of pondering endlessly over prophesy and afterthoughts. But this is exactly why these unadulterated decisions, taken in the heat of the moment, turn out to be the most blissful ones of one's life. The story centers around England's iconic Bletchley Park and its marvelously queer assortment of geniuses, whose efforts were one of the greatest aids behind the Allied victory in WWII. The starkness of how the Park compound descended from an absolute bustling secret services HQ to a deserted token of long forgotten war-time English history is otherwise symbolic of the lives of its inmate codebreakers and oddball geniuses whose stories had taken a similar descent after "war-time" was over and their need expired. But in the very end, it must be mentioned that even when post-war quiet manages to seep into the viens of these exceptional brains, there comes those moments of nostalgic surge when one must revisit their glory days spent in rigorous war efforts: because memory is the one place where their worth was never abandoned.

Una historia increíble, relatada de una forma divertida y original. Personajes completamente diferentes pero cada uno especial a su manera. Me encantó.

5 star read. I love Kate Quinn's books and this is one of my favourites so far. Quinn takes us to England in 1940. Three different women are selected to work at what they discover to be Bletchley Park as codebreakers. Wealthy deb Osla (dating Prince Philip no less), Mab-a girl from the rough part of town, and Beth-a girl demeaned by her overbearing mother who believes she is stupid. The girls all find their niche at Bletchley. While they work on breaking the impossible Enigma machine codes, there is a spy in their midst. This book was so well written, the characters so well developed and the storyline clipped along, I enjoyed the read so much. I hated to see the end of the book as I felt like I was saying goodbye to friends I had enjoyed getting to know. Quinn just keeps on getting better with every book. A great read.
