Williams Mug Shaving Soap, 12 Count

If you know how to use William shave soap. It can be the best bang for buck in shaving. Soak it in hot water in your shave mug for about a minimum of five minutes.I normally soak the the puck while I’m in the shower before I shave.By the time I come out of the shower. I pour out the water with my soaking shave brush and whip up some awesome shave. It’s slick and creamy. The smell is a citronella, Which I happen to like. The only negative is it used to be $.50 to purchase the soap. Now you have to buy it in bulk to even get a good value.. Regardless, if you know how to use Williams shave soap. Still one of the best deals in the market today. It can be one of the best tools in wet shaving.

I've been using Taylor Sandalwood Shaving Cream: http://www.amazon.com/Taylor-Old-Bond-Street-Sandalwood/dp/B0007MW2ZW/ref=pd_ys_sf_s_rp_a1_3_p?ie=UTF8&refRID=1H97H5369APDF086K2V4 which has worked quite well - but I find that I go through a container rather quickly. My five star review of the Williams is based on three criteria: Cost / Effort / Results. Cost: When purchased by the 12 pack the cost is less than half of the Taylor product - if one assumes that one consumes the product at an equal rate (at current Amazon Prime pricing). The Taylor product comes in a nice plastic container with screw lid; the Williams comes in a cardboard box. However each product requires the use of a secondary container (AKA shaving mug, see below). Cost advantage goes to Williams. Effort: When using the Taylor product I soak the shaving brush in a separate container (shaving mug) of hot water for 2 minutes. Then I dip the bristles of the brush into the soap cream about 1/4" a few times to load up the brush, empty the container of water and use the same container to whip the Taylor cream into a rich lather. The procedure for the Williams incurs no more effort, but is somewhat different. I place the soap in the container with the brush on top and fill with hot tap water. (The container is large enough to hold the soap cake and deep enough to submerge 3/4 of the length of the bristles in water while resting on the soap cake). After a 2 minute soak I drain all of the water out of the container and shake as much of the water out of the brush as I can in a few shakes. I then use the brush on top of the soap cake (still in the container) to work up a lather. If I leave too much water in the brush the lather is rather thin - best to have the brush damp but not soaking wet when creating the lather. The hot water will have softened the soap cake enough to allow it to lather up. Effort advantage - a tie. Results: I get a smooth shave out of each product; lubrication lasts through the shave (I make two passes), and clean up is a quick face rinse and dry. The Taylor does have (to me) a nicer scent than the Williams; since scents are so subject others mileage may vary. However I find that the Taylor scent (as well as that of the Williams) is quickly overpowered when I rinse my face, dry, and apply after shave. Results advantage: A tie. Although I will miss the sandalwood scent of the Taylor product I will not miss it enough to justify the extra cost over the Williams. I will be sticking with the Williams Mug Shaving Soap for the foreseeable future. Again - if you give the Williams a try and have trouble lathering up, try soaking the cake of soap submerged in hot water for 2 minutes to soften it up and then lather using a wet (but not soaking wet) brush. If the lather is too thin you may have too much water in the brush bristles. EDIT: The 'shaving mug' in which the Williams soap cake resides between shaves has an airtight lid on it, much like the airtight lid on the Taylor container. Thus the Williams is not left completely open to the atmosphere between uses. Hope this helps.

Great lather, great shave, great Price. If you're willing to use the mug and brush, this is an excellent product and very cost effective. I place my shave mug into a larger bowl where I pour boiling water. This way, the content of my shaving mug stays Hot. I dip the clean brush into the very hot water (near boiling temperature), then into the lather-mug with a Williams soap to make a nice Hot lather. The hot water in the bowl keeps the mug hot so the lather stays hot for a long time. In addition, I can rinse the razor in the sink, then just dip it into the hot water to 'warm it up'. I like the feel of a hot razor and believe it gives a better feel for a shave. I've tried other shave soaps, some expensive, and find no difference. Why spend more? Williams is a great soap and value.

I've tried a lot of shave soaps and Williams Mug Soap feels the best on my skin. The time-tested way to get a great Williams Mug Soap lather: drop the puck into your favorite mug. Fill the mug with very hot water and put your shave brush into the mug. Let both the soap & brush soak for about ten minutes. Empty the water from the mug while also shaking the brush until it's damp, not dripping water. Load the brush for about thirty seconds, then transfer to a lather bowl and build your lather, adding only half a teaspoon of water at a time, if necessary. You will have enough thick, creamy lather for three or four passes.

I have used this product for years. It works fine for me. Last longer than some more expensive soaps. When I could no longer buy it locally, I started buying it from Amazon. The vendor ships quickly and product arrives in good shape.

This product is old school barbershop good and has a good price point. It lathers well and allows a smooth shave. Despite having sensitive skin I’ve had no issues after several weeks of shaving. The scent is also more barbershop like than spa like but it has grown on me. So, Williams does what it is supposed to and I will continue using it.

I have used this shaving soap for many years It works very well, easily makes a good lather, and -- most importantly -- has little or no fragrance. It has been increasingly hard to find of late. Most stores in my area which used to carry the brand no longer stock it. I was happy to find this bulk purchase of 12 soaps at a very reasonable price -- so reasonable it relieved me of any hesitation in buying so many shaving soaps at one time. They will not go bad over the next few years -- in fact they will dry further and will last longer when I come to use each one in the future. I recommend this shaving soap.

I have enjoyed this bar soap to make my own lather when I shave. I use the mug and brush as apposed to the spray can of shave foam. I am sensitive to artificial scents and additives and this has none as far as I can tell. It lathers nicely and creates a good shaving soap foundation to take off the morning stubble. I tried finding it in the local shops but it seems everyone that usually carries it has not had an order in. It sells in Canada for around two dollars a cake, so it is very economical too. Thanks Williams for your wonderful product.

I have sensitive skin and asthma and many shaving lathers irritate my skin and bother my breathing. This product does not. I by the large pack and last 1 1/2 to 2 years, very economical. Lather up like with a bar of soap and work it well in your whiskers and you get a smooth clean shave. Been around since 1840 for a good reason! Love it.

I've used this soap for decades. Recently I tried other (more expensive) soaps and when I tried to buy this soap again it was only available online and the price had gone up 50%. It does have a smell it didn't have before, sort of like citronella, but I can't smell it when it's lathered on my face. I can't get a better shave with most other soaps, with the exception of lanolin based soaps which leave my skin in slightly better shape, and the razor burn lasts only for a short while. It's far better than vegan/vegetarian soaps, using which I can't get as smooth a shave and feel the razor burn until late in the day. Even when using the same blade for a few days the shave from using Williams soap is beyond reproach. Some brushless shaving creams will give a slightly better result, in that they also give a smooth shave and the razor burn lasts an even shorter time. It depends on how much you want to spend and how you want your soap to smell.
