Great messenger bag that passes as a briefcase
I had a need to upgrade from an urban sized sling bag to a more professional looking bag. I spent weeks researching different bags and decided on the Commute 2.0. Starting with the outside, on the back there is padded laptop sleeve that can fit my 15 inch laptop. On the back there is also another pocket with a zipper on top and a zipper on bottom. With both zippers open, you have a luggage pass through. If you don’t need that, you can keep the bottom zipper closed at all times and now you have a quick access rear pocket. The front does not have any pockets or easy access to pockets unless you pull up the flap to access a napoleon pocket. Once you unbuckle the straps, you have access to a pocket that has a key lanyard in it as well as the napoleon pocket. There is Velcro with a silencer pre installed cover the hooks. Inside the bag, there are several compartments. The first is a smaller compartment for smaller items. It does not have any organization such as pockets or pen holders. I purchased a medium sized cocoon grid it from Amazon that fits perfectly in that pocket and alleviates the need for pockets or pen holders. The main compartment is good sized. I can carry an expandable “red well” folder in there loaded with paper plus some legal pads in there no problem. There is then a soft padded separator that can likely hold a smaller tablet and cell phone. Behind that divider is another slot where another laptop 15” is able to fit. The bag comes with a removable strap. Unlike the Commute 1.0 which I also have, it does not come with a quick adjust strap. The bag carries well cross body and it appears to be designed to be carried on the right side of the body. In addition, the bag comes with a cross body strap. In black the bag looks sleek and professional. It does not replace a well made leather bag, but it is passable on a court room or for a business meeting. Overall, I am very satisfied with the Commute 2.0. I also considered the Chrome Kadet Max, the Tom Bihn Pilot, and Topo Designs Global Briefcase. I think the Commute 2.0 looks better and, from my research, has similar functionality.

Very spacious and comfortable
I am delighted with my purchase. I am a lawyer and make appearances in court regularly. If my file is not too voluminous, this bag is perfect. It is very comfortable to carry and it is very spacious. This avoids the need to bring a heavier briefcase or one with wheels. Plenty of secure and species compartments. Highly recommended.

Decent bag, but hoping for more for the price
This is a decent bag, but I was personally hoping for more for the price. The bag is designed for a 15” laptop according to the manufacturer. They really should specify 15” MacBook, as that’s what the internal laptop sleeve really seems to be sized for. I was able to fit my work-issued 15” Lenovo machine in there, but it’s tight. The same really applies to the external water bottle sleeve - I am able to fit my 18oz yeti water bottle in there, but it’s a tight squeeze. This seems designed more to hold a disposable 12oz ice mountain bottle. I get not fitting a 32oz or larger giant water bottle, but the 18oz insulated bottles are really pretty standard size. There’s a quick-access external padded pocket that I guess is designed for a tablet, because while it would be great for a laptop you need quick access to, it really would only fit an 11” or maybe a bezel-less 13” model. It’s weird to me that the luggage sleeve/pocket/strap is zipped at the top and bottom. I guess that means you can use it as a pocket if you aren’t carrying a roller suitcase, but the zip from top and bottom make it not a very secure pocket. There should be more organization in this bag in general. Besides the laptop sleeve, there’s two neoprene organizers and then just one big gaping bag pocket. There’s another pocket in the front, but it has no top to secure it, so I find I can’t really put anything in there. Lastly there’s a small keys and trinkets pocket in the front, which is only big enough for your keys and maybe a knife or lighter. The water resistant fabric feels like it will be effective, but I personally try to avoid ever testing this. The shoulder strap is sturdy.

Perfect for a teacher
I bought this because I'm a pre-service teacher. I needed something that would safely carry my laptop, multiple books, papers, lunch, etc. This bag is perfect for what I'll be needing as a public school teacher. It's not too voluminous and bulky, like most messenger bags, and the handle enables you to carry it like a briefcase. Still, it has the waterproof properties and ability to sling it over your body like a traditional messenger bag; it's the best of both worlds.

Nice quality bag!
This is my very first messenger bag. Fits my laptop very well and there’s a ton of space inside the bag. The water bottle holder is really small you can probably fit a 16oz Poland spring water bottle in it. Nothing bigger. The only issue I have is that there’s not a lot of exterior pockets so it’s not so great having to unlock the bag each time I need to grab something

Nice quality
A gift for my wife. She ended up returning it because she wanted a different style. But we both agreed that the quality was way better than similar bags she's owned.

Missing my older Timbuk2 products…
Well made but WAY too small and significantly lacking in features. It’s basically a glorified laptop sleeve with a shoulder strap. Where my original Timbuk2 bags all had multiple pockets to divide up gear, power cables, phone, multitool, sunglasses, etc., this bag is just the padded laptop portion and an open area. Though, there is a small zippered pouch on the back, it doubles as the trolley strap for luggage, so you can’t keep anything in it. I’ve used Timbuk2 bags exclusively for almost 25 years at this point. This is the first time I that I’m now considering moving to a different product. Bummer.

Teacher's dream!
This is exactly what I was after. The side pocket carries a thin water bottle (recommend getting a metal one). Plenty of interior room. I guess it could be a bit better if it had some smaller interior pockets, but overall I'm very pleased.

Passt alles. Klares Ja!

Great bag, lightweight and perfect for traveling. Fits a ThinkPad Yoga X390 perfectly.

I was deciding between the Timbuk2 Messenger classic bag or this commute, but decided on the Commute because it had an external water bottle holder and luggage pass through. While the water bottle holder seems a bit too small to hold my water bottle, its still pretty good for holding an umbrella or my sunglasses. Overall, the bag feels a bit too big for my everyday use but on days where I need to stuff all my things, it works like a charm. Love the numerous compartments too, though I've ended up using only a handful of them because I have trouble recalling which compartment I've put it into. All in all, highly recommended if you're looking for a messenger bag, though the water bottle holder compartment will probably be a bit too small for you.

Very well designed and crafted. In use daily. This is my second bag after the first one lasted 6 years.
