FANTASTIC POLAR EXPRESS! Looks, Sounds, and Runs Terrific!
Great Job Lionel on a Wonderful O Gauge Polar Express Train. I cannot think how you all could have made it better at the price you sell it at. Sounds like a real Train (Choo Choo sound), the bell, the whistle, the movie sounds, the smoke, the headlight, the cars that light up, etc., are all Terrific. For those who are wondering if the O scale is worth the extra money, YES! Our sons have the plastic (larger scale) which is perfect for them as they have small children that love to attack it. But the O Gauge is mostly metal like the other Lionel Trains and the Engine is heavy. And thank you Amazon for making the price a little more affordable. It's Perfect and we cannot be happier! Thank you!

Early Christmas with The Polar Express
Returned first set because of one (1) faulty track section. New set perfect! I'm 80 years old and enjoying my second childhood.

Easy to assemble and operate
Very cool set based on the movie the Polar Express. Tom Hanks' announcements, train whistle and smoke generator work very well. Don't plan on using the app though and connecting via bluetooth. Seems the app has not been updated in a very long time, so long that it does not work with Android 14. The set comes with a very capable remote control though. Overall, a very nostalgic toy to help decorate the house for the holidays.

Great Starter Set. Sturdy and well made.
UPS dropped the ball on getting this train set here on time. I'm not going to penalize the rating due to this, even though I wanted to. The train set is well built, except for th plastic "railing" on the observation cart (last cart). The little plastic pegs that fit into the end of the cart almost broke off. Very flimsy! I recommend using small amount of crazy glue to secure it. I ordered an extra set of fastrack to make a bigger oval. Also included in the video is the holiday peppermint tank and the HOBO cart. The engine is pretty powerful. It is currently pulling 6 carts right now and still runs pretty fast. I tested the engine at full speed and it is FAST. I wouldn't recommend running it that fast because it might risk derailing. I did not use the included remote. Apple app has more function. I tested the smoke maker and worked just fine. You can control the smoke from the app as well. A train expert I know said make sure to turn off the function from the back of the engine when you're done using it or else it might ruin the smoke maker. This set was bought for my 11 year old son. I don't allow my younger son who is 7 to play with it. I don't recommend anyone younger than 11 to play with this set. Lionel recommends 14 years of age, which is too much in my opinion. I will definitely add more accessories like bridges and manual track switches in the future. Overall, I like this set and how well it is built. You can definitely add to it and will hopefully last for years if it is maintained and taken care of.

Beautiful but very finicky
I have a special place in my heart for The Polar Express and have been watching the movie every Christmas since it the movie came out. I have been wanting a train set for as long as I can remember but I knew if I was going to get one it HAD to be the Polar Express.. It was pretty easy to put together and once you turn it on oh my it’s Amazing and I could watch it for hours. Looks spot on!! Now for the cons.. This set is extremely tempremental and slips off its track very easily. I think I had to fix it daily because of one thing or another that caused it to slip. It is also difficult to pinpoint exactly where it comes off track and you have to really look at it. So if you have animals, toddlers, or pets that may bump it this may not be the set for you. I love this set so much but I feel a lot of work goes into it…

Low quality and overpriced
The engine seems fairly robust but the cars are light and appear very fragile. The connection between the engine and tender was tricky to seat properly and the couplers between cars are thin, cheap, and finicky. It looked good and sounded good, but it only ran 4 or 5 times and then the transformer died. This set is far from the quality you would get from the more mainstream Lionel offerings, and definitely not worth the price.

Nice train for the tree!
The family loves it. The included track fits perfectly around our tree. Went with this set because I think the lights in the passenger cars make it more interesting to watch under the tree with the lights out. It’s not super detailed but it’s also not 1000+ dollars. The engine is metal and the cars/tender are plastic but they don’t look/feel cheap. Expect some mild maintenance (cleaning/lubing/troubleshooting). I’ve not had any issues with the track separating though it is the first year and we also don’t run the train fast (often) but I’m expecting I may need to slightly bend the male connectors or crimp the rails a bit (see YouTube). The track is embedded on top of hollowed plastic so it tends to be pretty loud at high speeds. At low speeds it’s not a huge issue but still sounds like a steady rain. Some of the forums suggest different fillers to deaden the noise or replacing the track all together if it bothers you. The sound effects sound better than I expected - not overly compressed or tinny. The smoke is pretty gimmicky - It doesn’t puff much (at least mine doesn’t). The controller is nice - I didn’t care for the mobile app. When I ran it from my iPhone, the connection would eventually drop if unattended. Maybe there’s a setting somewhere to prevent this but I didn’t look for it. In the app you can control the volume and pitch of each sound individually. Your sound adjustments will stay put if you go back to using the remote. The app had a bug and I couldn’t get the conductor voice volume back up but you can reset your settings with the remote by holding all three buttons down while you turn it on (I don’t think that’s in the manual). Also, you CAN control the volume with the remote; keep throttle neutral, press and hold the mic and horn button, then adjust throttle forward and release buttons when you’ve reached desired level. You are supposed to unplug it when you’re done, there’s no switch - not a big deal, I’ll probably put a smart switch on it. I have no issues with it derailing unless my four year old is clumsily trying to stick the figures on the roof. My only real complaint is the railing/floor extension on the rear of the observation car (as others have commented) that easily falls off. I chose not to superglue since it’s already so fragile I didn’t want it to break when bumped. I did duct tape the bottom (you can’t see it) so if it does get bumped, the rails should still pop out without breaking and the piece won’t be lost. The kids were knocking it off every time I turned around but has not had any issues with the duct tape. With my minor complaints aside, everything seems to be in working order and for the price point it’s a nice set for a beginning hobbyist. I know my kids (and their parents) will enjoy seeing it run every Christmas. Have fun!

Much Improved
My husband and I purchased this train for our son’s birthday. He had been wanting it for a while. He had been rather respectful and patient about it because it is not cheap. When he finally opened it up on his birthday, he was ecstatic. Checking out the train, it looks and works great. The listing says that you can use bluetooth to control it with your smartphone but that doesn’t seem like an option available for our version? I have seen older videos of people reviewing this train and having issues with the back railing falling off the last train car. They have apparently fixed that issue as ours was pretty sturdy. The engine is obviously heavy and everything was pretty straight forward for setup so it didn’t take him long to set it up and start playing with it. We were a little sad because the version we got didn’t have the hitchhiking hobo that comes out of the top of one of the train cars. The train comes with a few figures which are great. Our youngest loved playing with them and discovered that there are small holes in the doorways for them to stand in and so on. Unfortunately, the figures usually get stuck in the doorways if they shift while the train is running. The train did come on time and quickly after ai ordered it and was in great condition. The outer box had a few dings and holes, but the inside box and the box for the train itself were not damaged at all. Aside from the lack of bluetooth and the hitchhiking hobo, this was an excellent purchase.
