Great starter kit with a launch pad and controller that will be useful for a long time.
I bought this mostly for the controller and the base, but the included rocket is a nice touch and would make this a good kit for a gift (though rocket engines and wadding are not included). First, the base. This is a simple rocket accessory, but it works great, costs little, and sets up fast. The base is plenty sturdy enough for small and medium sized rocket kits being launched from a fairly level surface, like a park field. The angle is easy to adjust so that the rocket launches straight. The controller is a simple, one button controller with a safety key to prevent accidental launch. The wires are long enough to put enough distance between you and rocket for safety. The rocket itself worked well. Using the largest recommended engines I would estimate that it hit around 1000 ft. We launched it 3 or 4 times, along with other rockets using the same pad and controller, and it launched perfectly every time, flew as straight as the wind would let it, and deployed the parachute each time for a safe, recoverable landing with no damage.

Perfect starter package
Purchased through the Estes store. The launch pad and igniter work great, the rocket was super easy to put together. This is exactly the starter kit I was looking for. Some things to note: This kit does not come with rocket engines or wadding. The smaller 1/8" launch rod is included with the launch kit. It doesn't come with a storage/transport box like back in the day.

buy a solid one piece launch rod,the included 3 piece one is no good.
a pretty good first rocket. have an adult help you. rocket assembly is easy. slide fins in can all the way. 3 piece launch rod is a flimsy joke. failed BEFORE first launch. I bought a (longer)cold rolled steel one piece launch rod for 3 dollars at hardware store. rocket flies great, and the engine ring works great. c11-8 engines for the win.

Classic Estes kit
Classic Estes model rocket kit, good beginner kit. Went together fairly easily. My glue set almost immediately as I glued the engine housing to the rocket body leaving them ever so slightly out of alignment but that is probably my fault. Kit does not come with engines or recovery wadding, items are not supposed to be included but you should be aware.

Cheaply made. Does not include any motors to start off with so not a true “set”

Great starter kit for first time rocketeers
Pros: Simple build for tween rocketeers (ages 10-12). Comes with all necessary components, except batteries for launching. Does not go too high for first-time rocketeers (meaning if their aim is off a bit, it won't end up a mile a way). Instructions are clear, and all parts fit per instructions. Great value for the price! (less than $25). Cons: Launcher requires fully charged alkaline batteries to work well, rechargeables just don't cut it. You will likely have to buy extra igniters, since no model rocket manufacturers make good ones anymore. Problems with igniters: a. may burn up but not ignite the engine, b. may not work at all in humid weather, c. may not burn with partially used alkaline batteries, d. may not burn at all with rechargeables. Misc: Two 11-year-olds built/assembled this rocket in one evening. Launched successfully six times on a subsequent evening. Seriously, what do you want for a sub-25 dollar kit?
