Do the art pro-channel and pro-vla sound about the same in audio quality?

I have never heard the pro channel, but what I have read they would be the same.... there is a bit of a tone change in the old and new models ,don't bother swapping tubes, I heard no difference in that ..but I can not feel how soft the air is, And I have never learned to walk in the rain without getting wet. I can Tell you the Art Pre And Art Vla are just as good as my UA pre 610 and dam close to my LA2A..... (real pricey) I am sure some know it all that has super sonic hearing far above human level that can walk in the rain, with out getting wet, will tell you how stupid my opinion is... my story and I will stick to it, ART makes great stuff at a very fair price not a very over price ! hope this helps audio engineer producer over 28 yrs hope this helps Mark Donovan.. :)

can i plug a guitar into it for a realistic compression?

Probably not, at least not directly. This compressor requires a fairly hot line level signal. Most electric guitars run about 10 dB below line level. However this would probably work quite well if you ran it through a pre-amp first.
