Foundational Knowledge
Let's cut to the chase. It's a Field Manual published in 1965. The contents are old and outdated, but the principles found in the book can be relevant to modern times. While I don't recommend this if you are trying to learn the art of Evasion and Escape, I do recommend this if you are trying to get a grasp of how S.E.R.E began and how its evolved.

My favourite was always the original FM 21-76 survival manual version. But I've collected others over my lifetime. From all services on the subject of survival outdoors in the military experience. British equivalents would be No Need to Die by 'Jungle' Eddie McGee - the survival training manual for the UK elite Parachute Regiment and the Pathfinders. And of course the SAS John 'Lofty' Wiseman's excellent SAS Survival Manual book series. All good books on survival in the extremes of experience.
