2019 Safari Ltd Woolly Rhinoceros The Woolly Rhino is one of my favorite Pleistocene creatures. It’s also one that I feel is underrepresented in all forms of media, especially the toy realm. Thankfully, Safari Ltd has graced us with the definitive figure of this impressive beast. Hair is notoriously difficult to sculpt, but the brilliant artists at Safari have done a phenomenal job. There are long hairs, and short hairs, all flowing and lying naturally like actual hair. The massive horn is beautifully realized. It’s impressively large (as were the real horns), without being exaggerated. It’s also sculpted very well, and even includes the growth ridges that form along the length. The feet possess the correct number of toes, and all of the hooves are painted. The figure is also anatomically correct, and very visibly male. The pose gives a sense of an ambling walk as if grazing. Most companies would probably have opted for a charging pose, but I’m grateful for the more peaceful depiction. The coloration is spot on. Unlike most prehistoric creatures, we know exactly what colors Woolly Rhinoceros were, thanks to several frozen specimens, as well as cave paintings. Everything here is accurately colored, and the paint is perfectly applied. The insides of the ears are a darker brown than the rest of the body, and nostrils are painted a nice glossy black to give it that naturally wet look. The eyes are incredibly lifelike, and really amplify the overall realism. This is an incredible figure. I’d go so far as saying that it’s in the top three for this year’s releases, in my opinion. I highly recommend picking this one up. If you’re a fan of prehistoric mammals, this one is not to be missed.
