Solid Barn Door for the Price — Just Know It May Need Some Touch-Ups Later
bought the S&Z TOPHAND 42" x 96" Unfinished British Brace Knotty Barn Door with the 8FT Sliding Hardware Kit about 18 months ago, and overall I’m still glad I went with it — mainly because of the price and the fact that it was fairly easy to put together. After living with it for over a year, I have noticed some natural wood shrinkage between the boards now that the wood has fully dried. I did two coats of paint originally, and I’m starting to see some of the wood-puttied nail/screw holes showing through, so it’ll need a little caulking and a repaint soon. The hardware works well, but just a heads-up: the metal bar the door rolls on was slightly longer than the space where I installed it, so I had to cut it down and redrill a couple of holes to match my wall studs. Once up, though, the door rolls smoothly when opening and closing. For the $250 I paid, it was a huge savings compared to similar doors at Home Depot or Lowe’s that were $800+. Even with the upcoming touch-ups, I still feel like we made the right choice and saved a lot of money. Overall, a good value door with minor long-term maintenance to keep it looking its best.

Great purchased. Takes awhile to assemble and hang.
Love this item. It does take some skill or 2 people to assemble to hold all the pieces in place. It is a monster of a door. But it looks great and cuts down on noise from game room. It soaks in the stain when you paint it. I think it is a great purchase.

Don't waste your time or money
Edit: 3/26/23, a week after this review I finally was able to hang my door, and I find out that my wood is warped. It doesn't slide right and it hangs up on the stops. I am changing my two star review to a one-star review. Won't buy from this company again. It has taken me a little bit to write this review because I wanted to give all the good things about this door it's due. I purchased a 40 inch wide door. The door was very easy to assemble and the wood seemed like good quality wood. So that was the first thing I did was assemble the door. It was the easiest part of all of this. When I opened up the packaging for the hardware, everything seemed to be good quality. But as I laid the rail out for me to determine where it needed to go above my doorway, I realized that they had given me the bare minimum of railing for me to hang a 40 inch wide door. Realistically, if you have a 40 in wide door you need double that to clear your opening when you slide it back. I was given a 79 inch rail, that also had to have stops installed on each end, so I was already in the negative. I could have made it work and added a 12-in extension rail to it, but there were no extension holes drilled at the end of the railing. So in order for it to work with my door opening one end of the rail had to go exactly at the edge of my woodwork. Which means that the first hole that was drilled in the rail was seven and a half inches from there. So I wasn't even able to grab a stud with the first lag screw because of where the placement of the holes were drilled. I called Amazon and told them that I was running into issues with the rail and that I needed the company to send me a longer one, I even offered to pay extra money to do that and I told them that I would send back their 79 inch rail. Amazon gave me the number to call S&Z's customer service and for 2 weeks I tried to call and leave a message but the mailbox was full. Finally one day, I was able to leave a message. I gave them my name my order number and what I needed and I never heard a word from them. I tried to call them back for another week and still nothing. I called Amazon and told them I was having trouble getting in touch with them so they contacted the company theirselves and Amazon could not get resolution or a response from them either. Amazon offered a return and a refund for my trouble, but I had already put the door together, it seemed less of a hassle to try to figure out what to do with the railing then to try to figure out how to get the door apart and send it back. I could have ordered another rail but it would have cost me another $129 for a 7 ft rail, and at this point, it was the principle of the thing. I ordered my door in January of 2023 and it is now middle of March and I still do not have the barn door up. Because of where the placements of the holes are in the rail and the sheetrock anchors they gave me did not have a stop ledge on them, so when I put them into the wall and tried to screw the lag bolts in they just pushed back into the sheetrock. I did not want to use a header board to install this barn door because the header board would have come out past my trim mold and it would have kicked my door out too far. So I have finally found a half inch wide headerboard to use and I will attach the railing to that and hopefully I can get it hung this weekend. Oh, and the instructions to hang were useless. Would I buy from this company again? Probably not....NOT because of the quality of the door or hardware, but strictly because of the customer service of the company. If you are going to sell products in the United States through Amazon please make sure that your customer service is top notch, because that's what we expect.

Great project starter
Great for the price and if I had all the resources I could not come out this well. Clamps, Brad gun, and wood glue helps but not a nessatity

Got what I paid for!!
The price on this door is appropriate. I didn't expect this door to be of great quality for the price and it met my expectations. The door went together without too much difficulty, but one of the side rails was warped almost 1.5" making it difficult to get the door panels to seat right in the grooves for the rest of the door. Also, the groove on one side was split almost half the way down, but was still attached. I had to hold it out until I got the panels in the groove and then use wood putty to fill in the crack left by the split. It also made it almost impossible to pull the sides in to seat properly and left about a 1/2" gap on one side between the side rail and the cross rails This also left the door bowed on one side, but not that noticeable once it is hung. Otherwise the door looks good once assembled. The instructions need a magnifying glass to read and read like brail with the decimals, etc. I realize this door was produced in China, but if it is being sold in the US, at least have alternate instructions with US standard measurements and enlarge them to where it is not necessary to use a magnifying glass to read. Otherwise, all hardware was included as required and the quality of the rollers and track are nice, but may need to include in the instructions that unless a full header board is used, the wall spacers for the rail are not long enough to clear standard door trim. Otherwise, it all needs to be taken back off and redone or some form of additional spacers with be required in order to set the rail out far enough to clear the door molding. If I were not handy with wood working and projects of this nature, this door would have me pulling my hair out before the project was completed.

Stain wood prior to assembly.
Looks great, glides flawlessly, and super functional. It’s been probably a year since installing. Some things to be aware of. The wood will shrink leaving you with unfinished gaps. Solution stain all wood prior to assembly. The door is heavy and most likely will need some kind of ledger for support. This will also allow hardware installation without necessarily hitting a stud.
