It is a cheap DMM and it is not trying to pretend to be something else.
Works fine. Cheap, convenient, bought two just because it is good to have a DMM in a car, in my pocket and God knows where else.

Great multimeter
I've used this multimeter to measure things from button cell to CR2016 batteries to AA and even car batteries, and this proved to be useful and reliable through my tests. I don't really know how to use it but from tinkering from it, I use mine on the V~ 20 (DC) setting which provides for pretty accurate measurements. There is a small User Manual that comes with it but it doesn't actually teach you how to use the DMM. The product that I received was slightly different than what is pictured, and the box that it came in is also toned down to less flashy graphics. I like it very much and can't wait to see how long it lasts. I think it uses a 9V battery but that's already packaged inside the DMM, not sure it'll be until that 9V conks out. The red and black testing probes seem a little flimsy at first touch but I reinforced them with a little hot glue where I thought the wire might break... no problems as of yet! Buy this for a cheap and (sofar) reliable Digital MultiMeter. Don't mess with those old '50s analog multimeters as those are too tough to read and are often not as reliable as this. If you need a DMM for more important things like testing batteries for medical purposes, I would suggest to get a brand name DMM but for the price, this is great for the casual hobbyist! Edit: You plug in the black leading wire to COM and for tasks that draw less than 10Amps, plug red into the middle jack that says VQmA to measure things like AA battery voltage and small tasks. BLACK ALWAYS GOES TO COM. I suspect other reviewers say that this product doesn't work because they plug the leads into the wrong jack. I also forgot to note that sometimes at other settings than V~20, I get readings where the lcd reads: 1____. Maybe this means that my battery was out of range for that specific range-test-field but I'm not sure.

Good Value Multimeter - Recommended
The DT-830B Multimeter is not a high-end Multimeter, nor is it priced like one. It is an inexpensive multimeter that is good value when you consider all of the features. This multimeter performs all of the standard functions you would expect, Resistance, DC Current, DC Voltage, AC Voltage, and Diode checker. So far my meter has proved to be fairly accurate, but I wouldn't trust it for detail work involving tight tolerances. Note: It does not have an audible tone on the Diode or Resistance testers and it easy to misread the manual to assume it does because the documentation covers more than one model. You have to locate the 830B in the chart to see which features are included and ignore the features in the instructions that not on this unit. For the low price of this multimeter I will not be too worried about losing or damaging it and if it breaks I will likely buy another one. Recommended as an inexpensive basic multimeter for the casual user or hobbyist.

Surprisingly accurate for the price.
I got this multimeter as an addon to put my order over the $35 free shipping threshold. I already have multiple multimeters but you can never have too many. While this isn't a fluke or high end multimeter, this does surprisingly well, is pretty accurate and is good for casual use. It comes with the red and black testing probes at about 2ft length and the battery standard 9volt for it's LCD screen and it turns on right out of the box. Some measurements for reference, your results may vary as all batteries and multimeters are different. AC V~ 200 volt switch 120 volts 60hz power out of Tripplite LC1800 AVR - 120.2 volts 120 volts 60hz direct from wall/service 118.4 volts note these AC measurements seem to be about 0.7 volts or so lower than other meters, but this is not too serious unless you are a scientist or professional in which case you should have more than just one $5 multimeter anyways. DC V--- switch set to measure up to 200 volts DC (because if voltage is above 20 volts on 20 volt switch it will just go blank) - Renogy 100 watt polycrystalline 12 volt charging panel w/ no load partly cloudy - 20.6 volts (this matches renogy's specs and is normal for 12 volt panels) switch set to measure up to 20 volts DC - Newbright 6.0volt NiCad battery - 6.45 volts Sanyo eneloop 1.2volt AA Li-ion battery 1.23 volts Kirkland 1.5volt AA Alkaline battery 1.48 volts All the DC volts are as expected and pretty spot on. Your results/product may vary but overall I'd say for $5ish this is a good value and works just fine for casual use or as a backup.

Unfortunately, failed quickly
A typical basic Chinese made. Example similar to those I have used for years. It breaks no new ground and in the past were known for their reliability. Unfortunately, after about two weeks of usage, this one started giving very erratic readings on something as simple as AA batteries and then eventually failed completely so I had to return. Apparently under Amazon‘s return policy it was not necessary to actually return the product so I disposed of it.

I think you get what you pay for with this thing. I have not tested it extensively but it seems to be close and will do the job and the prices under $10 so that’s good. In your hand, it feels like a cheap plastic toy, though I have to admit. If you have anything more than in frequent use, I would suggest getting a better quality. Course it depends on your needs - made in China, of course.

The device is basic and will work in a jiffy for simple tasks. I was able to sort our my basket of unknown batteries in short order. Great price and small (size of an adult hand) so fits in my toolkit easily. Would recommend if not looking for heavy duty product.
