Marianne Moore made this selection of fifty-five poems herself in 1969 from her Complete Poems anthology.It is therefore of great value to the devotees of her 'open verse' style and with her notes thereto is also an insight into her 'hybrid method of composition' (phrasis) which in her words she was unable to outgrow.'What are years', perhaps one of Moore's most reflective poems, is included and happily this poem and a few others she recited and recorded in her lifetime thus leaving a definitive and authoritative interpretation of how to read,recite and understand the indentations that often replace grammar in her work.
