I was skeptical, but this combo leveler / tamper works well & reduces channeling when pulling a shot
When I saw some of these for over $100, I thought it was all hype. when I saw this brand at 1/3 or 1/4 of the price, I thought this would be shoddily made. But this worked exactly as shown and reviewers said. The leveler quickly evens out the espresso grounds to avoid unevenness that leads to channeling when pulling a shot. The tamper on the other side, quickly and effectively compresses the puck. It is adjustable, but it took me a few minutes to figure out how to adjust it - loosen the middle a bit, then unscrew the leveler and tamper sides a little at a time, and retighten the middle. the tamper side has some numbers showing so you can adjust the size. a small quibble is that some espresso grounds get caught in the leveler/tamper making it a bit harder to clean. I would purchase this again and recommend this to others.

Price is right, feels right, love it.
Fantastic at the right price. Nice and heavy, and fully adjustable both sides. Works great with my Gaggia Classic for a two-shot basket. Instructions aren’t clear on how to adjust, but essentially the black part is how you lock your adjustments to the silver sides. Loosen black parts, adjust silver, retighten. Simple!! I already had a decent tamper so this was slight impulse buy, but at the price do not regret the consistency I can achieve, as well as just how nice and premium it feels to have a tamper that deals with the edge of the basket!

Pretty decent for the price
This product works very well for the price. It's not perfectly sized for my baskets and I suspect that is true for most 58mm portafilter baskets, but I would have to pay a lot more for a more precisely sized leveler, and so this is a great compromise. Some people want to use this to skip tamping, and I think I've seen reviews saying that still works. For me, I use this primarily as a leveler and still tamp separately afterwards. The edges can be sharp (THEY TELL YOU IN THE PRODUCT DESCRIPTION THAT IT IS SHARP) and so I avoid wiping it down or swiping it with my skin, and instead use a wash cloth to get any leftover coffee ground off. Overall, I feel like this product met my expectations for the price I paid.

Apexstone Leveling Tool: a half-millimeter lesson
As a methodical DIY espresso enthusiast, I’ve used the Apexstone 58mm leveling tool alongside a 58.5mm portafilter and tamper. While the build quality is solid and the tool feels premium in hand, I’ve consistently observed edge separation in the puck—grounds around the perimeter remain under-distributed, leading to channeling during extraction. After careful testing, I traced the issue to the 0.5mm diameter mismatch. The leveling tool, though labeled 58mm, doesn’t fully sweep the basket edge, leaving a ring of untouched grounds. My 58.5mm tamper compresses the center beautifully, but it can’t correct flawed distribution. Recommendation This isn’t just about Apexstone—it’s a caution for all espresso gear users: Match your leveling tool precisely to your basket diameter. Even a half-millimeter matters when chasing consistency and clarity in your shots. If you’re using a 58.5mm basket, invest in a 58.5mm distribution tool. Your puck—and your palate—will thank you.

NOT WORTH IT unless you love spritzing jets everywhere
Long review here, but if you read my other reviews you'll know I take product purchases seriously and prefer to give the type of review I WISH others would share before I buy a new product to try out. This specific product will be going back as soon as I submit this review, and here's why .... I bought this to try to optimize my morning routine, maybe shave a minute or so off over my usual process using a no-frills Rattleware tamper I've had for eons without problems. I have a very consistent spro routine, a Baratza Sette 270 grinder which doses directly into a standard 58mm no-ring double basket mounted inside a bottomless portafilter because I like one of those maniacs who likes watching my shots come together. With my preferred coffee bean on a 5.40 second grind at micro/macro grind setting of 6G on the Baratza, I output 18g of coffee consistently. Using my old Rattleware tamp with that 18g grind, with a bottomless portafilter, I might see one spritzer late in extraction my typical liquid output is 1.95oz, consistently, always within a tenth of an ounce confirmed by weight. I like streamlining processes so naturally when I saw this unit, read blog articles, watched online videos, I fantasized what it'd be like to smooth and tamp on my mat with a simple flip and brew. I really wanted to see what the hype was about so I ordered one this APEXSTONE units because the price of the MATOW unit has more than doubled in price since it launched and this unit is virtually identical ... actually there's two dozen similar units out there at this point, all using the same pictures, only practical difference is the etching in the side or texturing of the outer ring of the unit. I followed the two better online YouTube videos on how to perfectly adjust this APEXSTONE leveler and tamper combo. I had it perfectly dialed in to level with the textured side, then to compress an additional 3ish mm beyond that using the flat compression side. First shot was pretty bad, channeled hard, liquid output well over 3oz, so clearly it wasn't extended enough. I must've ground off 3-4 baskets in a row after that, fighting to pull any shot without half a dozen spritzers shooting coffee all over the place, spritzing typically starting in a couple seconds after first drip, early in extraction. This was confusing for me because I clearly don't have this issue with a normal hand tamper, and I could feel a the a bit of counter push-back off my mat you learn to feel for using a regular tamper. I could tap out a complete puck after using this unit, but noticed the edges were loose no matter what I did. The next few shots while dialing in output between 2.5-2.8oz output in 27 seconds using my preset PID-integrated brewer, whereas I consistently got 1.95oz output with my Rattleware and rarely saw a single spritzing shooter. I continued to follow the same process with the APEXSTONE, same amount of coffee, same grind size, same weight on a zeroed basket, running the flat side of the tamp out around 0.5mm - 1mm each additional shot. Made sure I polished with rotations as indicated, following generally the same process I'd seen in multiple places online. No go. By the time I was about a dozen attempts in and through 1/3 bag of coffee, I gave up, finally landing at a ratio of 18g dose .with 2.3oz output, almost a half ounce more than what my regular standard tamper was packing in/out The APEXSTONE tamper side was extended almost as far as it would go, which is baffling. Still fighting spritzing no matter what I do, right up to the last shot. I took extra care to carefully dry my basket between shots, clean after, and at least 3x during the process I went to my old hand tamper as a sanity check, which still consistently output 1.95oz. I suspect the problem with this unit is poor QC or manufacturing, specifically with regard to edge tolerances. I noticed the tamping side has extra play and jiggles in my portafilter basket, When I pulled out my digital caliper, measured my Rattleware classic tamper, at the leading edge, it's right around 58.2mm. The APEXSTONE tamper doesn't even measure 57.6mm! While it does a great job at getting your puck flat and polishing it, it does nothing visible to firm the puck edge, and I suspect this is what's enabling spritzing for me - loose edge is allowing imperfections for blowthrough. Were someone using anything other than a bottomless portafilter, they probably wouldn't realize it, just that their shot may've tasted a little over- or under-extracted. Needless to say, I can't personally recommend this product. I'm not a professional barista nor a coffee snob, but I am passionate about my morning spro, I'm methodical, somewhat OCD, totally not a perfectionist but maybe a little more retentive than most in my pursuit to get it. What I'd say to you if you've read this far is this: If you're getting good results with your current tamper, or you have a competition basket in measures of 58.3 - 58.8, this product is 100% NOT FOR YOU. It isn't precision-machined. Just stick with what you're doing instead of buying this, or set your expectations lower than I did. If you want to level and tamp at the same time, maybe look at other similarly priced higher-precision products like what Normcore, INS, LuxHaus and Rattleware are putting out, not this unit, which is totally indistinguishable from the many other identical products in the marketplace. If you can't seem to get a good shot using a standard tamper, maybe it's worth spending a Jefferson on one of the identical units to this from the big AZ marketplace. Mine is going back.

It works. Somewhat easy to clean and use.
Upon receiving it I took it apart to clean - and found some very unpleasant grease mark (I hope it was simply a grease mark) inside. It did come off with washing detergent and was assembled OK. As advertised, height on both ends were adjustable (and lockable in place). I have so far made ~10 espresso with this, and am happy with purchase. I will come back and leave an update ~3 months or so. Update: It has now been over 3 months and I am still using it. Keeping 4 stars. 18 months update: Still using it and easier to use than other stampers. Revising to 5 stars.

It is a great built product for the purpose of making great coffee through your manual coffee machine. I had a very minor issues to start with. But I adjusted both distribution and tamper sides according to my portafilter. Wow!!! What an amazing result. Tampering coffee is no longer a hard work anymore. I love this item.

Too small for IMS baskets. Need 58.5mm instead. Other than that it feels well made.

Pas parfait mais pas loin. Je crois qu'avec toujours les mêmes réglages pour la quantité de café j'apprécierai un peu plus.. Mais le distributeur est bien nécessaire pour éviter le channeling..
