Lumberjanes Vol. 1 Review: Action packed, hilarious fun for a fan of the outdoors - Full of sass, snarky quips, and the occasional pun, this book is not for the faint of heart, or the serious of temperament (or if you have a problem with people NOT subscribing to your particular religion). It starts off reading like a traditional scout manual (boys or girls), and goes into a brief passage about silly badges that I would have loved to have earned when I was a scout. One abrupt cutoff later, the comic starts, and goes into a wacky adventure that relates to the badge previously explained. While I enjoy the setup, the continuity of the story likes to jump ahead, so you're not getting every detail of every day, and that's fine with me. The five main characters, Jo, April, Mal, Molly, and Ripley (well, six if you include their stressed out cabin leader, Jen), are entirely relatable. They all have a thirst for adventure, believable traits, and even an irrational phobia, albeit later on a VERY rationalized phobia. All in all, with the promise of whimsical adventures, crazy circumstances, and a longing for a time since past, Lumberjanes delivers a fun bit of wilderness much needed to escape the dull monotony of our boring lives. So put on your hiking boots, grab your favorite walking stick, and prepare to jump headfirst into the wild outdoors. Watch out for poison ivy! Review: Great for Both Kids AND Adults! - I can't gush enough! This comic really captured my imagination. It's fun and goofy and mysterious and fun and awesome! It felt like comfortable old favorite while at the same time being fresh and new. Why hasn't this been done before? The individual issue plots are fun and tie into an overarching plot very nicely. There's enough mystery to keep you wanting to read future issues. The characters are all well-developed as individuals. They're all capable in their own ways. They all support each other. It's refreshing to see a group of girls who aren't all about the "girly" stuff or getting catty over boys. The art style fits this comic perfectly. All the variant covers in the gallery are a really nice addition. I loved seeing different interpretations of the characters in other art styles. I would give this to kids and adults alike!

This story is not what I thought it was going to be.
Beware the Kitten Holy is a funny story. I love the way this graphic novel is drawn and colored. I like that it's very vibrant. I like that the images seem to be kind of wide even though they are cramped into a small space. I think that helped add to the whole “Great Outdoors” feel of the story. This story is not what I thought it was going to be. I feel like this story was really written for maybe teens or pre-teens because the content seems, kind of, juvenile but in a good way. It was very simple; kind of, innocent in the way the magical elements were presented. Still, adults could totally read and enjoy this if they don’t take it too seriously. So, the first thing that I like was the whole female wilderness survivalists who are kids, thing. That's like two things already that really appeal to me. We've got young characters who are also females surviving out in the wilderness which is kind of against the status quo. I love the fact that this story is so funny. I think its humor and the drawings really send the story over the top. Without there being so much humor and without the images being so vibrant, I probably would have given this story a lower rating. It's not a complicated story but it isn’t that simple either. Some people may just not get it. What I really liked about the story is the constant theme of friendship. You have this group of young survival girls who are basically tormenting their camp counselor, which anyone who's ever gone to camp, can relate to. This group of friends, whether they are or aren’t traumatizing their camp counselor, stick together. They help each other out. They laugh at things that are funny and they can poke fun at each other while also building each other up. None of these girls are vindictive towards one another. They're all very different and they seem to accept each other for their differences. I also liked the Indiana Jones/Nancy Drew mashup happening within the girl’s wilderness adventures. Even when they do cross paths with other creatures such as wolves or even boys, the girls seem to find a way to have the upper-hand, whether planned out or through total coincidental calamity. Some readers might find the content to be a little off-putting considering the age range for readers. It's hard for me to clearly say that this is a graphic novel written for teenage girls between the ages of 13 and 16 because I really don’t know; that’s just what I assumed. I will offer two warnings for potential readers. (1) While this is a very light and fluffy story, there are some dark and or disturbing moments. (2) *SPOLIER here* Also, two of the characters seem like they might have a crush on each other, which may be a matter of concern for conservative parents.** Still, all in all, this wasn’t a groundbreaking, earth-shattering phenomenon, but it was highly entertaining. I’d recommend it to comic fans, feminists, and anyone who appreciates a funny story that’s just a little outside the box.

Fun
This was such a fun and creative story! I really didn’t know what to expect when I started reading, but it didn’t disappoint! Even though it was a short, quick read, the story didn’t feel too rushed. I loved the characters and their banter and found myself chuckling several times.

Strong Girls, Fun Story for the Whole Family
I want to be a Lumberjane! I loved the first installment in this series and am looking forward to the next. It's perfect for Mid Grade readers to dive in on their own, but anyone in the family will enjoy the story telling and art. I got it to read to our 6 year old who is looking for stories about cool girls and also loves graphic novels. Lumberjanes features a great cast of diverse girls who are attending a scouting type summer camp and stumble on a spooky, mystical mystery. It'll be perfect for any young one in your home of any gender. The nice thing is, since I'm the one buying them, I get to "preview" them first.

Goofy quirky teen girls in magic woods
Crazy antics of teen girls in weird and wild woods for summer camp. I like the art a lot. This book was entertaining enough to finish and be interesting. Story isn't really deep. Humor and dialog reminds me of Adventure Time-light. I used to really like that kind of weird obnoxious teen quirk but I think I've just out grown it a little at 28. That's more on me, not the series here. Definitely recommend this for 11-22 year olds though!

This was such a great story and hilarious! Illustrations were awsome and the lumberjanes were such a fun group of gal's. I can't wait to read the next instalment.

Being in my late thirties I could possibly be about twenty years above the ideal demographic for this comic series but to be honest I've never acted my age. I read Nimona by Noelle Stevenson a couple of years back and loved it, looking for something else to read by Noelle I came across the Lumberjanes series which was quickly bunged on my Amazon wish list. We'll not talk about the bit where it has taken me two years to getting around to buying and reading it though, anyway this book is all kinds of crazy cutesy supernaturally bonkers brilliance. It follows our five Lumberjanes pals as they attend Miss Quinzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpets camp for hardcore lady types and each chapter follows our plucky gals as they earn their Lumberjane badges such as the Robyn Hood Badge and the Everything Under the Sum Badge. This is no straightforward girl guide camp, there is all sorts of weird stuff going down in the woods but nothing our girls can't handle. Jo, April, Mal, Molly and Ripley are equally cute, sassy, smart and innocent all rolled up in to an adorable ball. They are the kind of best friends everyone needs, they've got your back and they'll stick up for you no matter what. As for the look of the book, it is lovely and colourful, full of greens, oranges and red that make the scenes explode of the pages, the illustrations are interspersed with the text that explains how a Lumberjane obtains the many badges they can earn. A sweet read, full of good humour, it's been compared to Buffy (I've never seen it, I know, what the heck!) but I have seen Gravity Falls and totally get the comparison. Friendship to the MAX!!!

During a Twitch Stream Someone recommended this Comic and after looking it up I was intrigued to read it. So I gave in and ordered it. And omg I am so hooked! This Comic is amazing. The characters are so likeable and the story line is a tad confusing in the beginning (like what is happening). I just ordered the second one and cannot wait to continue reading and learn more about the story and the characters.
