Level 5 Reader - not the best stories
This is only the second of the Pearson readers which I have bought for my students. The previous being Animal Farm (level 6). There is a very large difference in level between the two, not just in terms of vocabulary but also idiomatic construction.I found the selection of stories disappointing in that the "solution" to all the mysteries (with the exception of the first in the book) was that Mr A was not Mr A but Mr B, a master criminal, whom Holmes recognised but the student (the reader) could not. Too many with the same formula was somewhat unsatisfying.I also found the questions at the back of the book (which were good for Animal Farm) lacked imagination.I went back to the originals of some of the stories and while I expected the language to have been simplified, the plot and "atmospherics" had also been so diluted as to remove almost all the magic of Conan Doyle. These stories are very much bare bones retelling and would be comprehensible to a 9 year old with the requisite level of language. A more mature reader may be left with the feeling that these are children's stories (which, of course, the originals are not).

A review from my book club students :)
Having lots of stories was a good thing because if one is boring, you can move on! The language was easy to understand, and in general the characters/stories were easy to follow. It was good because the stories were short- each story took 1-2 hours to read. This book is quite easy compared to other level 5 books (Wuthering Heights!!!!)However, they werenโt as interesting as expected. In some stories, there was a lot of description and not a lot of action! The โbig revealsโ at the end of every story also got tedious.

Bought at Amazon.co.uk: Sherlock Holmes Short Stories level 5 graded reader
My 15 year old French student who studied ESL with me this summer loved it. Graded readers such as these two are popular among my students.[[ASIN:1405882123 "The Diary of a Young Girl": Level 4 (Penguin Readers)
