## Description

A popular classic is now easier to use than ever before. With the computerized GoTo system, pushing a button or two is all it takes to find any one of 42,900 celestial wonders. Internal stepper motors slew the telescope at up to 3.4 degrees per second right to your target, placing it directly in the eyepiece's field of view. Using the intuitive menus on the hand controller, you will see more incredible sights than you ever dreamed possible. It will even take you on a guided tour of the best sights each month. A simple two-star or three-star initial alignment is all that's needed to begin easy, accurate GoTo operation. The telescope features an 8"(203mm)parabolic primary mirror, which collects 73% more light than a 6" scope, to take you way beyond the Messier catalog! And for the Moon and planets, the SVP 8's 1000mm focal length (f/4.9) gives you the ability to resolve fine detail at high power. Includes 2" rack-and-pinion focuser with 1.25" adapter, an 8x40 finder scope, and two Sirius Plossl eyepieces. The stalwart SkyView Pro equatorial mount and steel tube tripod provide a stable platform that's so smooth you'll think the telescope is floating on air. The GoTo system requires an external 12-volt power source like the Orion Dynamo Pro. Some assmebly is required. One year limited warranty.

Review: Great Beginner OTA - I am brand new to stargazing and amateur astronomy, and I am still learning and heading toward astrophotography, so I got this telescope after some research. Overall, it is great, once you get everything set up. Follow the assembly instructions exactly. The assembly is a bit intimidating for first-time users, but I got through it just fine. I deducted a star from the rating because the first mount that was shipped to me was defective - Basically, the hardware inside the mount head was stiff, and so it was difficult to swivel, nearly impossible to balance, and the GoTo system wouldn't actually slew without grinding the gears. That was a bit of a disappointment and I was terrified that I did something wrong and broke it, but luckily, Orion was a phone call away, and sent me a new mount head with no problem, so props to them on that! The eyepieces that come with the OTA are alright, but they are only standard. I recommend getting the eyepiece kit from Orion, because this particular telescope has a pretty wide range of useful magnifications. Also, the eyepiece kit comes with some nice filters, especially the neutral density filter for viewing the moon (without it, it'll almost blind you!) It is very difficult to do a proper polar alignment without a Polarscope, and this package doesn't include one. You can do a pretty good rough polar alignment, but I've found that rough polar alignment is not quite good enough for the GoTo to function properly - You'll still need to make some adjustments after the motorized slew. Another slight issue that influenced my deduction of one star is the counterweights - They really like to slide down the shaft, unless you clamp them down unreasonably tight (which is hard on the hands). I have to wear gloves to tighten them. This scope is technically portable (my home is surrounded in trees, so I am a portable user), but it is very heavy, especially with the counterweights (which you assemble on site, but still). If you need to be extremely portable, it might be worth looking at other options. Overall, this is an excellent starter scope that I can see myself using for a long time. I will update my review once I get enough practice to set up an astrophotography rig. Also, any questions, please comment and I will answer to the best of my ability.

**Q: Does this track automatically and continue moving or do we have to move it? Also how do you calibrate it to the place youre living in i.e. Pakistan?**
A: Thank you for your inquiry.  This telescope will automatically find and track celestial objects. There is an alignment process that you go through and it is at that time that you input coordinates for your location.  It can be used just about anywhere in the world.

**Q: Does the skyview pro 8 goto have dual encoders (to allow for manual scope movement without losing its alignment)?**
A: From what I can tell it does not. That is a feature of the StarSeeker IV line of Orion telescope mounts.  Hope that narrows your search a bit.

**Q: Does anyone know what exact equipment is needed to mount a Sony A-77 camera to take pictures?**
A: Dear Sir or Madam:  You will need a 48mm T-ring to attach your camera to the adapter that comes with the SVP 8.

I am brand new to stargazing and amateur astronomy, and I am still learning and heading toward astrophotography, so I got this telescope after some research. Overall, it is great, once you get everything set up. Follow the assembly instructions exactly. The assembly is a bit intimidating for first-time users, but I got through it just fine. I deducted a star from the rating because the first mount that was shipped to me was defective - Basically, the hardware inside the mount head was stiff, and so it was difficult to swivel, nearly impossible to balance, and the GoTo system wouldn't actually slew without grinding the gears. That was a bit of a disappointment and I was terrified that I did something wrong and broke it, but luckily, Orion was a phone call away, and sent me a new mount head with no problem, so props to them on that! The eyepieces that come with the OTA are alright, but they are only standard. I recommend getting the eyepiece kit from Orion, because this particular telescope has a pretty wide range of useful magnifications. Also, the eyepiece kit comes with some nice filters, especially the neutral density filter for viewing the moon (without it, it'll almost blind you!) It is very difficult to do a proper polar alignment without a Polarscope, and this package doesn't include one.
