No, it does not. It seems to be quite a bit smaller in diameter than the old ones and there was not enough ength to carry it forward. Unless your stair treads are very narrow, you won't be able to get it to walk down.

I counted 77 coils. Each is 2.5 inch in diameter. When compressed it is 2.25 inches long. Not long enough to perform as the original slinky

does it work on (thickly) carpeted stairs?

Yes, as long as the stairs are short enough. Its likely that the carpet won't be the issue as much as the length of your stairs.
