If I use 4 shunts in parallel, would device show 1/4 of actual current flow ? I need to measure up to 400 A draw.

Yes Considering the shunts as resistors, they obey the 1/R law. If each shunt of 1 ohm then 1/R= 1/1+1/1+1/1+1/1 1/R=4 R=1/4 then I =V across shunts/(1/4) This should hold true for the real world. Remember Voltage = (I)(R)

What would happen with an occasional 200a draw? Would it just not measure it correctly or would it be permanently broken?

Whereas I have not personally exceeded the maximum reading capability of this particular instrument, I have done so with many, many other ammeters, digital and analog with no consequence as long as the amount and time of overload is reasonable. The actual current being utilized by the meter's internal circuitry is in the micro amp range with little chance of heat damage. I'd assume that an overload indication such as a flashing display or , "err", "hhh" or "ovr" would be displayed.

Does this meter give a constant amp readout, and if I am using a 48 v system does the meter need a separate power supply?

The meter does displayed a constant current reading. The supply voltage you are providing to your device will also run the meter no need for a separate power supply.

When used to measure the voltage and amperes fed to the battery as opposed to battery output can/should you leave out the shut? 1 output side also.

Dear customer, If you are going to monitor battery, please connect it to the "Load" position. Meter have to work with shunt. Best regards, DROK
