Yes, you push to open. Fairly straight forward operation

What do the dimensions mean 3x1x3-is this length, width, height or length, height, width (white one)?

I am not sure what the dimensions listed mean. The one I bought measures 1 inch wide at the flat mounting surface, and with the plunger unlatched and extended it measures 2.25 inches in total length, and the height is about 5/8's of an inch. When the plunger is latched in the total length is 1.75 inches.

Can this be used on a closet door?

No it will work for a small cabinet door

How long is the lifetime of this thing theoretically?

Depends on use. It's has lasted longer than the original. Our household = 2
