There are two steps leading up to the bathroom/bedroom area from the living area of the trailer. During a recent project I was working on in the trailer I needed to remove the stair treads (the tops of the stairs) and when I did I discovered that the RV manufacturer had not used the space "under" the stairs for any purpose. Storage space is always at a premium in an RV so my wife asked me if we could find a way to make the steps open like the lid of a chest so we could utilize the space. I like the fact that these hinges are designed to lift the lid up and away, meaning the lid does not extend past the back plane of the box like a piano hinge, or other simple hinges do. Also, these hinges are spring loaded which creates the support when the lid (stair) is open and puts slight downward on the lid (stair) when closed to help keep the lid closed. I read some of the other reviews which talk about the lack of installation instructions and they are correct, they are no installation instructions included. There is one picture on the product info page with gives a measurement of 1.5" from the back edge of the lid to the rear screw hole for the lid portion of the hinge. It is designed to pull away so that you can put the chest against the wall. They aren’t as strong so we also kept our locking mechanism on it. **Q: How far away from the wall does this pull the lid? I would like to use this for a lid that is 1.75" and want to make sure it will still open.** A: Ours is 3/4” lid, and it may have a 1/4” between the lid and the wall.
