Will this work on a pcie 2.0 x 16 slot using an adapter and if so how many lanes will it use?

Yes, it will work fine. It’s a x4 lane device, so it will use no more than 4 lanes with a a passthrough adapter no matter what slot it’s installed in. If you use a switching adapter like the High Point SSD7101A-1, it will multiplex the x16 lanes into full use and achieve near PCIe x4 throughput. In other words, full speed.

Depends the HP has a m.2 slot and if the manufacturer left it accessible. Usually HP does but I'd check the laptop specs again to see if it has a m.2 slot. This hard drive btw fantastic for gaming on a laptop have had no issues since I've gotten the product last year.
