how much assembly is needed for the swing?

I love my swing, first before I put it together I applies redwood stain. Instructions were very simple and easy to understand. All of the hardware was easy to use. You only have 4 major parts, back, seat and 2 arms to assemble. Plus add the chains to the arms. IF I CAN DO THIS...ANYONE CAN. EASY TO ASSEMBLE AND VERY STURDY. DEFINATLELY WOULD RECOMMEND THIS TO ANYONE.

How long are the chains that come with it?

I did not measure them but hooked the seat to an existing "A" frame at the point where the front and back chain come together. The single chain hangs all the way to the ground so I would estimate the chains are approx 6 feet from the point where they join to the end. Hope this helps.

what size cushion would you suggest? With the dimensions "21.5 x 48.8 x 17.8 inches," which is the seat vs. the backrest?

I'm not sure which dimensions are which however, the seat is narrow compared to other swings that I've had.
