Shimano SPD PD-ES600 Pedals

For years I outfitted my road bikes with Shimano XTR pedals so I could use my SPD cleated shoes for road and mountain biking. I just bought a gorgeous carbon road bike, and the XTR pedals just didn't look right. I was happy to find that Shimano makes these SPD road pedals. They look very nice on the bike. Weighing just 279g a pair, they are 35g lighter than the top end XTR pedals and cost far less. Since they are only one-sided, I do have to get used to turning them over to clip in, something I don't have to do on the 2-sided XTR pedals.

I have been using the recessed shimano and ritchey cleats for many years and have them on all of my bikes. Recently some of my stuff has been breaking from fatigue but my old shimano pedals are still going. Still I had concern that they might fail at an inopportune time so I bought these new ones. So far I am happy with them which means they work just like my old ones but are a little lighter.

They’re light and small. When at rest they’re almost up side down where you can push them forward and click right in.

The cleat always rests facing down. That's fine, i always know where it is. If that's a deal breaker, XTs are always good. They're still better than dumb road pedals.

I put these on a new Cervelo Aspero gravel bike which I will ride mostly on pavement. I get knee irritation when switching between road and MTB pedals on my road bike and cyclo-cross bike. Since I ride pavement and gravel about half and half, that's a lot of switching and knee soreness. I decided to use MTB pedals on the new bike, but my spare Shimano MTB pedals are heavy. These are only 18g per pair heavier than my Look Keo road pedals and about 60g per pair lighter than my Shimano XT pedals. Since they are one-sided, getting in them is a lot like road pedals.

I've been riding Shimano SPD pedals for more than 20 years. I have A600 pedals on my road bike. Recently, I switched to a recumbent bike and needed pedals. Compared to the A600s, the ES600 pedals are lighter and a little easier to get in and out of. I have the cleat tension set to minimum, but I've had no problems with accidental releases. These are pretty much perfect for my needs.

Threw these on new TT bike and they work great. Nice and lightweight, minimalist design.

Ah... finally I’ve found the ideal alternative to clunky SPD-SL pedals and cleats. My race days are over, so I prefer SPD to avoid doing the duck walk as a I walk around. I use them with Bontrager Espresso shoes and the result feels very “road” to me. The pedals even look kinda like Shimano SL pedals so I can take out the haters. They do hang upside down due to the weighting, so clipping in can take a few extra seconds. I had the same thing with my SL pedals, so it’s like second nature to give it a little flip with the toe, then clip right in. Very happy in the end.
