Heavy wet grinder that works well.
This is heavy and appears to be well made. The stones turn easily and create a (fairly) smooth paste without creating too much heat. Besides being fun too watch :) it does a good job at grinding. The plastic 'stone cleaning tool' is fairly worthless as it rests on the rim of the bowl and doesn't offer much support. The stones are fairly heavy on their own, so care must be taken not to drop them! We find it easier to remove the stones and just scrape them off with fingers and/or a flexible spatula. Overall, we're well pleased with this wet grinder and would recommend it.

Awesome wet grinder. South Indian delicacies are a breeze now and taste so much better than normal mixer grinder.
I've purchased this wet grinder a month ago. And I am pleasantly surprised. This makes dosa batter, idli batter, various kinds of chutneys and it has never tasted better. And because it grinds at lower temperature, it tastes a lot better, and does not oxidize the batter so fast, so the batter lasts longer. Very happy with the purchase of the wet grinder. Would recommend highly to anyone looking for a wet grinder. Amateur Tips: 1) Always make sure you add the harder items to grind first and then the easier ones. 2) Always add water first, switch on the grinder and then keep adding the items in small batches till you think the grinder will be able to grind the load. I've also used the Atta kneader attachment. It actually makes the process much easier. For someone like my mom who is not so strong, it does the job of kneading the dough pretty easy..just make sure you put in sufficient oil. Without oil, it comes out ok but there is more residue in the edges which needs to be cleaned.

Replacement works well so far, pocket sized and seems to do its job well
Part Deux: The replacement Our bet; to replace versus refund, worked on both counts - Amazon took care of shipping us a replacement pronto and the new product that showed up works as expected! The new one arrived before the UPS guy came to pick up the old one. They did downgrade to USPS for the second shipment - it was an awkward moment when the poor USPS mailwoman lugged the heavy package (poorly packed and damaged box) to the door and asked if we had stones in there - we didn't have the heart to tell her that indeed there were stones in it :-) Barring the damaged outer box, everything else was in good shape and the product was put to good use right away, grinding rice and pulses. We ran it for two batches lasting 45 minutes each. The batter was ground fine, well done and we simply refrigerated the drum with its contents! The dosas and vadas turned out great made and we are happy so far with our investment. So, in summary, Elgi does have a good product here, perhaps they need to tweak their QC process some! More importantly, Amazon backed the customer like they always do and ensured the return, shipping and replacement were pain free and efficient, which helped make the glitch first time around a distant memory The first time: Damaged goods Ordered the Ultra Dura+ after reading all the reviews and hearing good things about it from family and friends. Skeptical about ordering from local retailers selling an item manufactured in India, hence ordered from Amazon for added security. Glad we did, as the package arrived 2 hours ago, opened it as my wife was ready with rice and pulses soaked and ready to go, found loose screws from the swing arm rolling around the box, penny sized ding in the steel drum, plastic around the swing arm fulcrum looked worn, white plastic shoes holding the rotating stones had black residue like they had been extensively used, the stone bottom had a scratch - QC sticker right next to the ding. Ridiculous thing being that the packing was pretty decent - the thermacol holders inside the main box were broken which is about the only negative thing about the packing - the main box was inside a box which was inside the amazon shipping box - seemed to have adequate protection, so it had to be damaged at the point of assembly. Either way, quite ridiculous for a $250 item to have such damage out of the box, severely damages reputation. We have decided to ask for a replacement instead of a refund as the product from what we have heard/read is good and this could be one-off situation. We have left calls for Gandhi appliances in Illinois (sticker on warranty card), Innoconcept in Georgia (USA service center) and at Elgi (manufacturers) in India - will provide further reviews based on level of customer service and quality of replacement product.

Great appliance!!
I was hesitant in buying this kind of a large specialty appliance but had been thinking about it for months. I was happy to say that shipment was timely and fast. It was packaged in its original box and then in another 2 more boxes! It came in perfect condition. For years I have used a standard blender to make idli/dosai, vada etc...but this had made a huge difference in the texture of idlis especially. The stone grinding of urad to a fluffy consistency is key to making fluffy idlis...and this rinder did just that. The size is perfect to grind up to 3 cups of soaked rice. I can grind 1 cup of soaked urad nicely (as it increases in volume as it grinds) I was surprised how quiet it was.

I thought the nice even and fine grinding of the rice and grain ...
It does what it was intended to do. I thought the nice even and fine grinding of the rice and grain in a reasonable amount of time to be of value. I have seen some comments made by people that have tried using it other than its intended use, which were remarked to be not good, I have not tried to utilize it in this way so I can't comment to how well it works for these uses, but I can say that it preforms wonderfully for its intended use. The machine seems to be well built to give it long life. I have used it several times now and it has not disappointed me yet.

good quality..
I've bought this online more than 15 years ago. don't even remember from which web site i used. Still working. The steel drum stone and rollers came soo smooth, it was taking too long to grind the dough. I brought the rollers separately from India 5 years ago and changed them. that improved performance again.

Extremely frustrated and disappointed
I was incredibly excited to receive this machine after a long wait since I ordered it via international shipping. Because it costed a fortune, and because it came from overseas, I was very careful to follow the instructions word for word. However, the machine's arm kept detatching no matter what I did. I cleaned the parts time and time again but it kept detatching. To add to it all, from the first day, the machine started smoking up from the first use. All in all, it felt like I took my money, threw it in the garbage, and got a huge disappointment in return.

El producto es de buena calidad. Encontré una máquina para triturar semillas de cacao de manera fácil. También la he usado moliendo para hacer agua de horchata de arroz, logrando una molienda muy fina. He hecho tejate (bebida tradicional de Oaxaca), y me ahorra mucho tiempo. Aunque la finalidad del producto es un molino, puedes cambiar las piedras de molienda por unas aspas y te ayudará a hacer la mezcla de pasteles. Lo recomiendo, valió la pena cada centavo.

Works as described. Best for making Dosa,Idli and Vada batter. The packaging was good and delivered on time. This brand, if I am not wrong, were the first to make a table top wet grinder. Back in India, my parents bought our first Ultra table top wet grinder in the year 1993-94. It's still working with zero maintenance to date.
