I bought the red and white one. **Q: Can this be used as the main pump for a tank? or should it only be used as a backup?** A: It can be used as a primary on smaller tanks but they function best as a backup. We have them running on tanks varying from 40g breeders and below.. **Q: It says must be plugged into a "wall outlet" to detect power outage. Does it mean if it is plugged into a power extension, it won't detect outage?** A: The pump will not turn on automatically if the power goes out. The unit is louder than everything connected to my reef aquarium including protein skimmer when percolating. I can even hear it clearly competing with the waterfall between my 2 tanks. It is even louder than the dependable & working ac only air pump it replaces from a national retail chain. That being said I have tested disconnecting power and unit still pumps air. I am currently testing how long battery will run unit & will update review with result. Two other minor things I dislike are all the LED's constantly blink running connected to AC outlet with battery backup. Power cord is really short.
