Fast and Effective Embedded Systems Design is a fast-moving introduction to embedded systems design, applying the innovative ARM mbed and its web-based development environment. Each chapter introduces a major topic in embedded systems, and proceeds as a series of practical experiments, adopting a "learning through doing" strategy. Minimal background knowledge is needed to start. C/C++ programming is applied, with a step-by-step approach which allows you to get coding quickly. Once the basics are covered, the book progresses to some "hot" embedded issues โ intelligent instrumentation, wireless and networked systems, digital audio and digital signal processing. In this new edition all examples and peripheral devices are updated to use the most recent libraries and peripheral devices, with increased technical depth, and introduction of the "mbed enabled" concept. Written by two experts in the field, this book reflects on the experimental results, develops and matches theory to practice, evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of the technology and techniques introduced, and considers applications in a wider context. New Chapters on: Bluetooth and ZigBee communication Internet communication and control, setting the scene for the โInternet of Thingsโ Digital Audio, with high-fidelity applications and use of the I2S bus Power supply, and very low power applications The development process of moving from prototyping to small-scale or mass manufacture, with a commercial case study. Updates all examples and peripheral devices to use the most recent libraries and peripheral products Includes examples with touch screen displays and includes high definition audio input/output with the I2S interface Covers the development process of moving from prototyping to small-scale or mass manufacture with commercial case studies Covers hot embedded issues such as intelligent instrumentation, networked systems, closed loop control, and digital signal processing Review: Buy this book! - This is by far the best introduction to Embedded Systems programming I have ever read, and I have read widely on the subject. What's also impressive is it uses the ARM Mbed which is an up to date platform rather than taking another bite at the AVR Arduino system, which, whilst excellent, has been overtaken by progress. I recommend this to professionals, students and amateurs. If I have one criticism it's that the Author could have chosen to use a less expensive target board, expansion board combination. Review: This is an excellent book. Although aimed at an academic readership - This is an excellent book. Although aimed at an academic readership, it also covers the interests of hobbyists. Three good points: (1) It is well written, (2) it has few errors, and (3) it has many interesting examples and exercises.

Great introduction to mbed
Very good book indeed. Aimed at the beginner, but covers a wide range of topics including radio communications (Zigbee, Bluetooth) so even experts may find this useful.

Light and easy reading for a professional software developer of 30+ years
Light and easy reading for a professional software developer of 30+ years. I'd highly recommend getting the NXP LPC1768 and the associated mbed application board to follow along with the content. Pick up some SG90 micro-servos and some 28BYJ-48 steppers while you're at it - they're cheap and help make your experiments come alive.

Excellent book on getting started with the mbed
Excellent book on getting started with the mbed. Lots of great examples along with the code to run it. I do have a lot of experience with programming and embedded systems. While the book does try to make learning about embedded systems easy, having some knowledge of programming and digital systems is helpful.

Better than I expected but I don't mean to be critical of the authors. A little too much on how to program in c++ but the authors know their audience better than me. A huge amount of information on the development platform they focus on.
