This does not come with a battery. However, yes Kobalt 24v batteries will work in all Kobalt 24v tools.

What is the beam like? How far will it shine in a tight beam? I need to see mares thinking of surprise foaling from across 3 acres...

I just went out in the dark to see how far I could see across my pasture with my flashlight and I could only see pretty well across maybe an acre or two, at best. I have horses, too, and would not be able to see what they were up to from 3 acres away. I think you need a much more powerful flashlight for watching those girls. Good luck.
