Failsworth Melton Mariner Cap in Navy

I've tried various breton caps including the standard camaret/royal navy version, the various versions from brittany boutique, elbsegler and sterkowski. All of them have one failing for me which is a circular design or crown, which means they don't sit well on my head which is longer fore and aft than in the beam - so they don't sit, fit or look especially good. This cap has a crown panel which is noticeably longer front to back than side to side. The only other cap I've found that has this is the brixton fiddler cap. The fabric is a nice smooth quality Melton wool with a viscose lining. The label states wool and viscose and I'm not sure if the Melton is a wool viscose blend or not, or just the lining being viscose. Never mind - I quite like viscose as a liner, it feels much nicer than polyester, much more breathable and doesn't retain so much heat if you're active (in my view). The crown is insulated with a diamond quilted lining. The label in the crown is rather nice and plain. I ordered large which fits my 59cm head nicely with a tiny bit of room, but not likely to blow off. I've found Failsworth hats are pretty consistent and their large always fits me quite well. That's just how I like it. The stitching is good, accurate and no or only few loose threads (top tip - cut away loose thread ends with a pair of nail clippers - much better than scissors because you can trim right to the base. Never pull!) I think this is going to be about as waterproof as melton wool or felt ever is, ie pretty good. I removed the fake chin strap and buttons from mine because I don't like the look myself. I'm looking for functionality more than anything (why don't you go for a flat cap then? I hear you ask... Well because they really do not go with my head shape, so this cap structure works much better for me.) As far as price goes this is unbeatable value for money and all the makes I listed above are significantly more expensive.

A well made hat and a perfect fit for the sizes I gave from a tape measure round the dome. Very warm, perhaps too warm for Summer. Pleased with purchase.

Great hat, excellent quality & fit. Very happy. Quick delivery. I carefully measured my head with a tape but initially ordered too large, then too small but hit on a medium. 1/4 size makes a massive difference!

Smart, well made and well-fitting. I bought the Failsworth cap having looked at many different makes and am so pleased I chose this one. It made a great Christmas gift for my dad (in fact I was hoping it wouldn't fit / suit him so I could have it!). I would recommend going up a hat size - I debated between buying the L and XL having read previous reviews and was glad I went for the XL (dad would normally take a L in most hats). He loves it!

Just what I have been looking for for some time. Nothing too fussy, no fancy buttons - just a plain good old-fashioned hat for someone of advanced years to keep the cold wind off in winter and protect from the sun in summer. Good quality and good price.

I use this product as a best hat as it is of good quality only problem was it was a bit to big and size down would have been to small but I have got over that problem

For THIS price -- it's a bargain, great quality, ideal fit and style.
