does it work with m & m's

Individual M&Ms may be too small but several scooped up at same time may work or the small packets of candy.

How heavy of items will this pick up....my son wants this to pick up his tiny aliens from Toy Story but wondering if they will be too heavy.

It will pick up the aliens without a problem. We used candy at first and now use old happy meal toys and other small toys. Just don't overfill the claw with too many toys or the claw won't have enough room to open while lowering to grab the prize. Look at what other people are using on youtube to get some more ideals. Does it take real money

It comes with plastic coins, but real money works too. My kids quickly figured out how the switch worked (they are 7,6,3, and 1), and then put the coin in just far enough to make it play but kept their coin to play on repeat.

Would a 10 year old be okay with this? or is it more for smaller kids?

A 10 year old will be okay with it. My son is 9 and used his trash packs figures. However, the game is not well made. It lasted only a couple of days and wouldn't play again. There's a lot of reviews with the same problem. :(
