Pretty thin, more of a spun fabric. I had to use landscape staples to keep down because I did not want to put more mulch on it. If you used quite a bit of mulch these would work great. Used 6 and not really pleased but they will work. I returned 2 packages and kept the one I had opened. Return was extremely easy and that is why I am giving it a 4. otherwise it would be a 2 or 3. Amazon was very easy to work with.
