Changing a socket can be time consuming. I have experience so the most difficult part was removing the old socket from the lamp. This new socket went in easily and works perfectly. The dimming action is very smooth and superior to other socket dimmers. The antique brass color is a fine match for my lamp. The only, minor, inconvenience is that the brass knob for dimming can come off easily. It fits but there is nothing to hold it on the stem of the socket. This is a slight inconvenience and it should not be difficult to solve. This provides an inexpensive solution to resolve an aggravating problem of the lamp.

I used to have a multi-bulb bedside lamp with a 40W bulb and a 7.5W bulb in it, that I gave up on a cross-country move. When I got a new lamp for my bedside stand in the new house, I really missed having the dimmer lamp for when I was unwinding with a book or just wanted a dim lamp to get across the room in the dark. After a few months, I bought this. And I sure don't miss my old lamp any more. I can't imagine not having this in my lamp any more. It was easy to install, very easy to make sure it was wired properly, no worries at all. It went right in where the old light socket was on my lamp. Now I can adjust the brightness to anywhere I want, it's got a better range of adjustment than my phone or tablet. And with a warm white bulb, I can read a paper book while unwinding without having the effects of the blue in LED screens keeping me from sleeping (and yeah, even with the iPad's night mode adjustment it's still not as good.) Plus I can turn it on at a dim level that doesn't wake my wife while I get up to see what sort of trouble the cat is causing now. :D

This seems to be a nicely made item, nice finish, dimmer is smooth and consistent. I bought a pair for our bedroom nightstands which were very old and elegant items. Please make certain that the cord you have is polarized, meaning you can only plug it in one way. One plug blade is wider than the other. If you have an old lamp with a cord that has two identical blades get rid of it for sure as it is non polarized and it is capable of giving you a very unpleasant 120 volt AC shock to actually killing you. A polarized cord has a wider blade and that is the neutral wire, which must be connected to the silver screw on the socket or switch. A typical lamp cord has one wire that has small ribs on it, the other is smooth. The ribbed wire is the neutral line and must always be connected to the silver screw or terminal on the socket. Amazon offers a wide assortment of polarized lamp cords for not much money. Now for the fun part. Customize the lamp to fit your exact needs. You're the boss and you can situate the components any way you want. For me we wanted to use them for 2 night stands. So I came up with an idea I call ''clocking''. I want the cord to come out the back of the lamp so I call that 12 o'clock. I want the harp (the wire that holds the shade) out to the way so I clock it at 1-6 o'clock. Then I install the switches in the 3 or 9 o'clock positions so they face the person on that side of the bed. This way access to the switch/dimmer is totally unobstructed. Now you stick your hand under the lampshade and all you contact is the switch. We love it, wife said how come it took you 50 years to figure it out!!! (he hangs his head in shame). Also we junked the dangerous non polarized ancient cord/plug assembly. If you can, I recommend using LED's bulbs as they run much cooler per lumen so the dimmer circuits should last the longest. Google LED colors so you can learn the best for you. I prefer the high 3000 kelvin range. Below is a bit brownish/yellow and when you get above 4000 they take on a bluish hue. They get really blue at the top end of the Kelvin scale. It's all just a matter of personal preference. Good luck and enjoy your brand new customized lamp!!! I took off a star because the knob that slides onto the switch is very loose. Just use a bit of adhesive like Gorilla glue or super to stick it on. Make sure you don't use so much it glues the switch so it won't turn!!! I would definitely buy this item again.

I almost had to get rid of my bedside lamp that I loved because my partner didn't like how bright it was at night - but this dimmer saved the day! It dims my lamp great. It does flicker sometimes, but since it's my bedside lamp it doesn't really bother me at all.

I purchased a solid brass lamp from Goodwill and I always rewire them. Purchased this to add the bougie dimmer option. The piece is great and works fine, the only issue is that the bottom piece did not fit my lamp (too small). It did however work with the original bottom portion and was able to snap in place with no problem. Who doesn't love it when a bougie plan comes together?!?
