Great product but in a NAS - they do not last forever
I'm an IT guy so I'm pretty fussy about the type of equipment I purchase. I have a Synology NAS at home for photos, music, documents, etc. That was my first NAS. A NAS is "Network Attached Storage" but it works like a giant hard drive that both Mac and PC can use. That makes it nice for us because we have quite a few Macs and PCs in the house. I also purchased a Synology Media Server which we use. Both of these devices use SATA drives. I purchased the Ironwolf Pro model because it was supposed to be quieter and more reliable. It's been great on both accounts. However, this year I noticed that my first purchase of this product - some 7 years ago - was starting to degrade. Synology has a setup where it will notify you when it senses degradation. Hard drives do not last forever - particularly when they are spinning all the time. One of the reasons you buy a Synology is so you can put RAID or SHR on it to protect from any data loss. So, even if one of my drives is degrading, I can purchase a new one and replace it with no data loss. So, that's what I'm doing. Sorry for the long explanation but I thought this might help some of you that are considering a NAS or are simply frustrated that you have to buy yet another drive. It's technology and it does wear out. The good news is that the price comes down to. In 7 years, my 10TB drive price is equivalent to a 16TB drive so I can get much more capacity for the same money. That's not a bad thing either.

6 Year Review
I bought 2 for my Synology DS920+ in 2020. Both are still going strong in 2026. Just added a third drive because they are so unbelievably reliable. Highly recommended!

Dead out of the box.
I finally got around to installing this into a machine. The machine gave me i/o errors while booting. This is not the main drive. The machine booted. I tried to use a partitioning tool to look at it and it reported I/O errors. I returned it to it's packaging and put in for a return.

It's working fine and there's no bad noises
It's running fine. The last one I had died in a day. If something happens to this one I'll provide an update

Broke down within a couple of months and Seagate Warranty replaced it with another defective unit
The 14tb NAS drive failed on me within a couple of months of purchase. The Seagate warranty was fairly quick and easy. However, I had to pay for shipping the old drive to them, and the replacement they sent was a refurbished one that was dead on arrival. I'm in the processing of claiming the replacement through Seagate warranty for an actual functional replacement. It's unfortunate that Seagate doesn't test their replacements before sending them out. I'm not happy about having to pay for another shipment back to them for the bad replacement, but at least the workflow to get it done isn't too painful.

$400 Paperweight
Bought August of 2021 as a spare for my NAS, when any in-use HD failed. Just had that happen, opened the box, install and NOTHING. DOA. I have tried connecting to a computer but it is not recognized. Tried external disk docks to try to detect and format, NOT recognized. So now I have a nice shiny $400 paperweight. Lesson to the wise, take these out of the box and make sure they work even if you don't plan on using right away.

Someone is knocking at the door honey! - This is a noisy unit
I have two units in a small NAS RAID1. They are noisy, both of them. It's annoying. Knock sounds are emitted from the drives on use. Because the unit does get used, the knock is constant. Of course this is a NAS specific drive and I guess this one was made for use in a Network Operations Center (NOC) which is actually a funny pun based in truth :)
