The first comprehensive illustrated study of the use of amulets around the world and throughout historyโข Explores not only the substances and symbolism from which amulets derive, but also the people and objects they protectโข Explains the differences between and the purposes of amulets, talismans, charms, and fetishesAll over the world and throughout history amulets have offered protection against negative forces, whether witchcraft, the evil eye, enemies, sickness, or accidents. Intricately beautiful or starkly simple, they come in an astonishing variety of guises: from stones, shells, and seeds, through animal tails, teeth, and claws, to beads, mirrors, needles, and bells. With over 400 lavish color photographs, this book explores amulets from every angle, including their symbolism and the diverse material used to craft them as well as the people and objects they protect. Sheila Paine traveled all over the world--from Afghanistan, Russia, and Albania, to Cameroon, Tunisia, and Mexico--to research the form, properties, and use of amulets, whether for health and safety or as channels for spiritual or magical powers. Worn as necklaces, sewn to clothing, painted on buildings, or hung in vehicles, amulets guard babies and brides; warriors, hunters, and travelers; livestock, crops, and homes through magical, not physical, means. Malign spirits and hobgoblins at crossroads have been feared since ancient times, but modern dangers--car crashes, new diseases, even cell phones--have ensured an abiding faith in the magical protection that amulets afford us that is still widely evident today.

very useful resource...
Borrowed this book as a hardback, from the library, many years ago..Thrilled to have my own copy.....Am a big admirer of Sheila Paine and envy her journey's round the world, researching this subject. If you have an interest in this area, it's a must have resource...I now sew and produce my own 'amulets' for family and friends...some of them like it...erm...others don't really 'get it'....please yourself....it's a fascinating historical subject.

Good book, WELL DONE!
Hello there! I really like this book . It's an interesting subject. And I like because it crosses many and most types of religions, people everywhere. We all have some type of belief and no matter what it is there's amulets or protections or something we believe in and it all goes back to that no matter what when we're faced with life altering decisions or bad problems . We can all say were modern and we don't believe in that stuff anymore, but it's really not true, there's always something primal in us, something we always go back to in our time of need be it the crucifix or a prayer, lucky stone a picture of a loved one, a memory of someone gone or someone still here but far away, something that protects us no matter what that amulet maybe it has power in our mind and our heart . And this book seems to have really researched a lot of stuff well . I really liked it. Beautiful photography and I thought it was done really well I would recommend it to anybody . Thank you

Charming Sheila!
As ever Sheila Paine gives an excellent cover of amulets and charms. The book is both informative and also a delight to read. The only danger is it may well start you off on a trek to find out more but the journey will be worth it.

Fantastic book
This is a truly wonderful book. The photos are clear and well laid out. The content is so interesting. I love all the stories of the way the amulets are used in other countries. It really makes you realize just how much superstition exists in the world. I bought the book because I made an amulet for my mother and became interested in what all the various amulets mean and how they protect people or property. The book is so thorough and I love the way the chapters are laid out according to the type of amulet. Well worth the money!

A well written, well illustrated book
I bought this book to help me find and use amulets and similar things in my art work. I found it an excellent resource - good pictures and a text that explains clearly what is what. I showed it to an art group I belong to and at least two other people said they were going to buy a copy. I have no idea if this would be satisfying to someone who is steeped in this material, but for me it is perfect. i thought the information was good and the presentation very good. I read it cover to cover and keep it at hand when I want to use it as a reference. Highly recommend it for a reference for someone who wants a good overview and a number of specific examples.
