Asthma - this is the only effective second-hand smoke filter I have found
Update in 2016: I've had this mask for a couple of years now, and I have reduced my asthma attacks more than 99%. I was having attacks almost bi-weekly because of secondhand smoke on campus. Now that I wear this whenever I'm outside, I SEE the smokers but I don't SMELL the smokers! Since I started using this mask, I'm down to having an attack only a few times a year, usually from things like perfume or lysol when I'm indoors and not wearing the mask, but NOT from outdoor cigarettes anymore. Sure, I have to look like a jerk while I'm walking around in public places that SHOULD be safe for people, but at least I'm not going to die just because of someone else's poor life choices. :] I added a no-smoking patch to the front of the respirator portion of the mask, so at least people have a clue as to why I'm wearing it. It's also very handy for going between the car and the grocery store. WHY on EARTH do people go stand in front of a grocery store to smoke!? And smoking in the parking lot isn't any better. I wish smokers would do everyone a favor and sit in their car with the windows rolled up so they don't poison everyone within a 200 yard radius. Anyway, with this mask, you can endure public places long enough to get your groceries loaded up safely. One tip, though. After you get in the car, run the air conditioner or the interior fan (my Honda has an in-cab HEPA filter) for a while to get any residual smoke out of the vehicle before you take off the mask. Also, if you go to a concert, you can carry this with you in case there is a smoke machine in the stage show, or in case people inside of the venue mistake "poisoning other people with second-hand smoke" for "partying". Yes, I know it's an addiction, but so is nymphomania and you don't see people doing THAT on the sidewalk in front of grocery stores, now do you!? To keep out cigarette and other types of smoke, I have found a combination that works for me: I use P95 prefilters with Multi Gas/Vapor Cartridges and change them once or twice a year, whenever it gets hard to breathe: http://www.amazon.com/3M-Low-Maintenance-Cartridge-Purifying-Respirator/dp/B00AEFCP0E?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage and http://www.amazon.com/3M-5P71PB1-Series-Particulate-10-Pack/dp/B0013Z0TV6?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage. IF YOU HAVE ASTHMA DON'T ASSUME THIS WILL WORK FOR YOU! I don't know how much or if any smoke is getting through; it's just not enough to make ME sick. Talk to your doctor and see if he or she can help you figure out a solution that works for you. You might also need to change your filters more often than I do, depending on how much you use the mask. Old Review from 2014: I've had this mask for a few months and I like it a lot. Fits over glasses and seals around the arms. Rubber gasket is soft and comfortable for extended wear. Well made. Comes with an extra set of prefilters. Easy to put on and take off. For asthma I used to wear N95 paper masks, but the smoke would still get through if I couldn't see the smoker and get away from them fast enough. I hate it when smokers hide behind things or in their car & pollute the air without even being seen, because if I don't know where it's coming from, I can't get away from their poison. I've almost died on a couple of occasions because of secondhand smoke in public places, so I finally decided that I'd get a real gas mask. So far, it has worked very well keeping me safe between my car and the grocery store, on campus, going to the movies, etc.

Perfect....so far!
I received my respirator today, so (as some of you have probably already guessed) I haven't had a chance to test out the extended use yet. I will update my review in a couple of weeks to let you know how it went. Let me start by saying my order arrived super fast, and I'm very happy about that. I purchased the respirator for woodworking/carving/sanding/finishing after reading about how dangerous it is to breath the dust and fumes from these endeavors, especially on a daily basis. Emphasema killed my Grandmother, my Grandfather was on an oxygen tank for years before he passed away, and my Dad is having trouble breathing now after spending the majority of his life in one shipyard or another. Needless to say, I want to avoid these kinds of circumstances. Half-face vs Full-face: I can already tell you that (as you would expect with the monumental price increase) this respirator is a million times better than the 3M half-face respirator I purchased to begin with. It's extremely lightweight and comfortable. The rubber that rests against your skin to create the seal is much softer and more flexible, making it less irritating, too. This is important to me, because my skin is ultra-sensitive. ~ The head strap on the half-face is cheaply made. Thin strips of elastic hold the flmsy head piece in place, and the the sliders that let you adjust it look like they might fall off or snap at any moment. The same goes for the chin strap and sliders. To be fair, they haven't snapped yet, and I've worn the half-face respirator everyday since the day it came in the mail. What more could I ask from a $15 item? On the contrary, the full-face respirator is very well made. The straps are thick and strong, the head piece is sturdy and comfortable, and the adjustable sliders are made with much thicker plastic. ~ What made me stray from the half-face respirator and fork out the money for the full-face, was the fact that I can't seem to get a seal on the half-face. When I'm wearing my shop glasses with the half-face respirator, the glasses fog up everytime. The shield on the full-face respirator has yet to fog up, and I feel like it's making a much better seal. I should point out that I ordered a medium sized half-face. It feels like it fits the way it should, but maybe it's the wrong size for me. That could be the reason it won't make a seal. I honestly don't know. I ordered the small sized full-face respirator just in case, and I've had no problem with it. It fits perfectly. I feel like this full-face respirator is a good investment for anyone who wants protection from a hostile environment on a regular basis. It's a comfort to know that my eyes and lungs are no longer at risk, and I can concentrate fully on the task at hand. It's nice not to have to worry about the long-term risks of sucking in all those fumes and dust particles. I have no doubt that this mask will withstand the test of time and abuse. You definitely get what you pay for with this item. I was afraid that the shield might obstruct my view while working on certain things, but after wearing it, I don't think it will be a problem at all. I will update my review when I am able to experience long-term useb of this item.

I have had so many troubles with gas masks as I have a big beak. This fits perfectly and gives no leaks. Even with glasses on it seems to keep dust and spray particles out. You'll be ready for biowarfare with this bad boy.
