It is not good for reading. Reading lights use the shade to shield your eyes from bright light while allowing direct light from the bulb shine downward on your book. For the same reason, this light is not good for lighting table surfaces either. It's really best for brightening up a dark corner of your room.

Had an electrical problem the second day I used it. The light starting flickering so I changed the light bulb and It immediately shorts out any light bulb with a pop. Scary.Don't waste your money.

what is the height to the top of the socket?

From the top of the wood base to the top of the socket is about 4.3 inches. The height to the top of the bulb depends on which size bulb is used. I am using a smaller / shorter 2 watt bulb.

Perfect for a desk or small area. Depending on your bulb, they can put off quite a bit of light. Perfect for those of us who hate overhead lights. I love that it's a plug-in, so I don't have to remember to charge it or lose the cord. I love the aesthetic of it, too - very minimalist and simple.
