Review: Works great for calibration of a baby scale
Review: I ordered this 2kg calibration weight to check the various sets of scales I use in homebrewing beer. I typically weigh quantities of grain and sugars at 3 to 4lb (1 to 2 kg), so this calibration weight should be ideal for checking the accuracy of the scales I use. Any significant error can adversely affect the quality of the resultant beer so eliminating any errors is critical. Any calibration weight should be properly certified but the vendor in the desertcart listing does not give any details of a certification (although I saw a question answered by the vendor as these being close to the OIML M1 accuracy class). I was interested to see if there were any details supplied with the delivered product - there weren’t. If the “close-to M1” rating is true, then this 2kg weight would have a maximum error of 100mg – none of my scales would detect such an error. The product was wrapped in a sealed plastic bag and packaged nicely in a plastic screw-body container with a thin foam strip surrounding it for protection. 2kg is a fairly moderate weight and if this product was dropped during shipment, some significant damage would have likely occurred (probably to something else like someone’s foot). Note that handling a calibration weight should be by using gloves (or tweezers if small). Fingerprints and dirt will affect the accuracy and possibly lead to corrosion which will also affect the accuracy. I used a pair of nitrile powder-free disposable gloves. Also note that if you move the weight while it’s still in the plastic bag, be careful, the weight will easily fall through the plastic bag (as I found out the easy way). I checked the accuracy of two sets of my scales. The first was a 55kg digital postal scale (gave a reading of 2000g) and the second was a 5kg digital kitchen scale (gave a reading of 2002g). I can’t believe how well the 55kg postal scale works. 2kg is only 4% of that scales’ range and I’ve really abused these scales over the years – yet it keeps its accuracy even at this relatively low weight. For storage, I packed the weight into a double-sealed “Zip-Loc” bag and put a 5g pouch of desiccant in there with it. All this just fit into the original plastic jar that the product was shipped in. Hopefully this will keep the weight's integrity intact for my next check in six months' or a year's time (or when my current scales self-destruct). I’m pleased with this product – even though I only used it for a few minutes. It looks nice and shiny so it must be good! Heavy calibration weights tend to be expensive (mainly, I suspect, because of the shipping costs) and this 2kg cost more than $30. That’s a lot to pay unless you really (or legally) need to check the accuracy of your scales. Perhaps I can rent it out to fellow homebrewers? I think the product would be greatly improved if details of any certification – or the results of in-house measurements (which they claim to be doing anyway) were supplied with it. I’d be surprised if it was legally acceptable for a business to use a calibration weight like this without such information - and they would be the main customers for a product like this.

This 2000g calibration weight is just the thing I wanted to test my digital scales to make sure that they are accurate. Right out of the box I was able to check that my postal scale was dead on. No complaints at all on this weight. My complaint is regarding the shipping box; the shipping box was pretty beat up when it got to me. The air cushion that was used was deflated and allowed the weight to be moving around in the box. This caused the plastic case for the weight to be slightly damaged but it still was able to keep the weight from getting damaged which was good. Overall this calibration weight does exactly what I needed it to so this met my expectation.
